The proposed Goods & Services Tax, now before Parliament. would replace the Federal Sales Tax. It has two main objectives: to make Canada more competitive and to improve the fairness of the tax system for all Canadians. The plan includes a new credit to offset part or all of the tax for lower or modest income households. This is the Goods & Services Tax Credit. HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN GET THE CREDIT? With your 1989 tax package, you'll find a green form explaining how to apply for the proposed Goods & Service Tax Credit which would be paid quarterly starting December 1999, if the legistation is passed. It will help establish whether or not you're eligible. Even if you don't have to pay income tax, it’s important that you fill out the green form and send it in with your completed income tax return. T HAVE ALREADY SENT IN MY RETURN - CAN! STILL CLAIM THE GST CREDIT? Yes, if you fillin the green form and send it in separately. Include a note of explanation and . people with answers. be sure to include your name, address and social insurance number. ARE THERE OTHER CREDITSICANGET? You may also be eligible to receive the Federal Sales Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit which are paid on the basis of 1989 income. You may not have to pay income tax, but you have to apply for these credits by filling out schedule 7 in your income tax package, answer- ing all the questions and sending it in with your completed income tax return. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? The information you provide is used by Revenue Canada, Taxation to determine if you are eligible for these credits, and if so, the amount you'll receive.
