But he never saw the 1980s or "99s, and the not-so-great Dr. Collins can tell you that London is the fiithiest capital city in Europe. Funny they don’t mention that in the travel brochures. But it is a fact, and one that gives sad mean- ing to that old song Goodbye Pic- cadilly, Farewell Leicester Square. Litter, litter and more litter. A mark of decline, and one of many such marks that afflict the British scene. Busing in from Stanstead airport and through much of the East End, | found the dirt to be astonishing. Riding through Hackney — now unrecognizable to anyone who saw it before the world went mad — I asked the bus driver what part of the city we were in. ‘*A bad part,”’ he replied. The East End of the old days may never have been posh, but it was never like that. It isn’t much better on the other side of the city, either. Some time before Dr. Collins arrived, sounds of alarm issued from No. 10 Downing Street when Maggie Thatcher drove in with the Presi- dent of France and was shamed by what the distinguished visitor saw. « “Clean up London,”’ she said. No luck so far, though. Much of this results from the British immigration disaster and the rise of London’s Loony Left, the success of which is due to the Risk analyzed THE VANCOUVER Port Corp. recently announced that it will commission an independent risk analysis of tanker traffic in the port of Vancouver. The assessment will cover the environmental and _ operational tisks associated with the movement of petroleum and chemical pro- ducts by tanker and tanker-barge within the harbor. Methods of handling-and traffic control will be evaluated. _ Once the port has received the report, a multi-agency panel will be struck to present findings to the public and to receive comments. The report is scheduled to be completed by December. “Thinking of Selling’”’ LIST WITH ME AND GET THE PROFESSIONAL SERVICE YOU WANT : i BOB KESSEL “The name your friends recommend” Office: 986-9322 Pager: 645-3346 Cellular: 240-2800 sutton group west coast realty past. Foreigners in their own land. Such things are ignored by the media. Or were when I was there. And old-fashioned patriotism has had it. Noel Coward would be in trouble today. Nothing but a racist. Turn on the gogglebox and you may be greeted by a smug black lady in dreadlocks, or whatever it is they call that funny Rastafarian hair-do. Either that or some plum-in-the-mouth accent exhor- ting the commoners to think noble. It is dangerous for the downtrodden to take a stand, too. in the land that gave birth to freedom of speech, ‘‘racism’’ can land a man in jail. But it is not that way for browns and blacks. They can be as vicious as they please, The guardians of law and order do nat press charges even when Moslem leaders call publicly for the murder of Salman Rushdie, the author who offended the Ayatollah. But if a white called publicly for murder his feet wouldn’t touch. The BBC is every bit as left- liberal as the CBC, and no more likely to put on an unbiased pro- gram on South Africa or immigra- tion. It, too, sings hymns to St. Nelson Mandela. Speaking of which, it was mad- dening to see the antics outside the main door of the South African Embassy in Trafalgar Square. Some left-wing lunatic was screaming propaganda into a megaphone and frightening the pigeons. Other loonies were waiting to take their turn, for this was part of a permanent, 24-hour, every-day-of-the-week picket.
