8 - Sunday, June 14, 1987 - North Shore News ea) LNAI 1s CCT emer ‘Crafty’ article ridicules subsidized day care Dear Editor, Must hand it to you. Shrewd, crafty, almost sadistic reporting! No way you are going to dredge around in sob stories the pitiful way the local daily media dumps on us. ‘“‘Wimps’”’ they are, just like Doug says. No sir! You get a success story. Fine healthy people, double in- come, one kid. Pretty rough, though, paying out $400 per month for child care. It just goes down the drain, doesn’t it? Doesn't help anyone else to have a job or contribute to HOWE SOUND Senior defends mill Dear Editor: No one would doubt the state- ments (North Shore News, Sun- day, May 17) by Dr. Sugar of Horseshoe Bay regarding the tox- icity of sulphur dioxide and other air-borne emissions, nor would there be much doubt about their effect upon people exposed to them at dangerous levels over a period of time. However, Dr. Sugar does not seem to consider the source of these pollutants in relation to his office. Perhaps he could differen- tiate the sulphur dioxide produced by the Canfor pulp mill at Port Mellon, some 20 miles distant and usually downwind, from the com- bined fumes from the automobiles, buses, trucks, motorcycles, out- board and inboard motors, B.C. Ferries vessels and B.C. Rail locomotives which are in the area, not to mention a brewery prac- tically in his backyard. The very ’ shape and position of the Bay area make it a veritable pollution bowl on a warm calm summer day. Regarding the effects of sulphur dioxide and other pollutants on the elderly: I am an old-age pensioner who has spent a lifetime of sum- mers on West Howe Sound, one third the distance from Port Mellon that Horseshoe Bay is. I also have an older sister who has spent 42 years living literally in the shadow of the plume from the Port Mellon stacks. For most of these years the discharge levels at the mill were neither monitored nor controlled. As a field test of the side effects, if any, we would ask the doctor to the economy at all! That's right, | forgot. A fundamental principle of capitalism is to covet, not con- tribute. 1 don’t suppose the Brassinatons would dare claim day-care ex- penses against their income tax? They would want to turn back 2 a accompany us on a day’s hike up one of the local logging roads. But in case they did claim their day-care expenses, it wouldn't be really costing quite $400 a month, would it? Why do | think you're so shrewd? So crafty? Almost sadistic? You printed that story just to show us all how stupid and ridiculous a federal day-care pro- gram is. And you made your point. Good going, News! Brian G.
