t. DRIVING habits can earn awards for B.C.'s
top professional drivers through a program sponsored
hy the B.C. Motor Transport Association, the Cana-
dian Association of Fleet Supervisors and the In-
surance Corporation of BC. UCBC).

The Fleet Safe 11 ing awards program is the first
established exclusively for B.C. professional drivers.
Previously, the only industry-wide awards program
was administered by the National Safety Council out
of Chicago.

The award, consisting of a lapel pin and wallet
card, which indicates the number of safe driving years
and type of vehicle driven, will mark each year
without a preventable accident. Drivers eligible for the
awards are those who spend more than 60 per cent of
each work day on the road, such as truckers. coach
Operators, taxi drivers, ambulance driveis, fire and
police officers.

drivers. Fergus Savage, manager of Fleet Safety Pro-
grams, points out that 80 per cent of commercial
vehicle accidents involve only 20 per cent of the pro-
fessional drivers. Of those accidents, 90 per cent could
have been prevented by the professional driver.

“The average professional driver's safety record is
outstanding, considering the number of kilometres
they drive each year and the challenging driving con-
ditions in B.C. The pros will average about one acci-
dent for every one million kilometres they drive, as
compared to non-professional motorists who average
one accident for about every 100,000 kilometres
driven,”’ says Savage.

In reviewing the causes of preventable accidents,
Savage says that in B.C., the major contributing fac-
tors are failing to allow for environmental conditions,
speeding, following too closely and failing to vield the
right of way.
