| Chowder] tourney left good | taste SATURDAY’S second an- nual North Vancouver Clam Chowder Championship left a good taste in the mouths of its organizers and par- ticipants. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter A panel or nine judges selected a world-class broth put together by a team of chowderheads from West Vancouver’s Troller Pub as the best chowder in the commercial category and the best chowder overall in the championship. In its rookie year, the North Shore News Clam Basters team placed second in the non-commer- cial division and third in the highly contested theme and decor catego- ry. In the glamorous celebrity divi- sion the Mad Mollusks from Squamish waltzed away with best chowder honors followed closely by the North Van City Supers. The Mollusks’, with a victory in a similar competition in Squamish in 1985, have vowed to put together a chowder-simmering dynasty. Eventual winner of best theme and decor was Clambo. The five- person team came outfitted in full military regalia, complete with pine forest camouflage, to suc- .esstully mix seafood with Rambo assault tactics. Runner-up in the commercial chowder category was a team from Snappers restaurant. Barely nudging out the News Clam Basters for non-commercial honors was the North Van Com- munity Players chowder team. Event organizer John Gordon said the championship was great. ‘‘We had some concerns about the weather, but the whole thing went really well. It looks like the cham- pionship will beceme en annual in- ternational event.’* The chowder championship, Gordon stressed, was launched as a total North Shore celebration and would continue to be a cele- bration for the entire North Shore. In addition to the rigors of chowder competition, Saturday’s seafood showdown, which was held at North Vancouver’s Water- front Park, featured an arts and crafts fair and musical entertain- ment. y om NEWS photos Tom Burley GETTING into the Clam Chowder Contest spirit are members of the North Shore News team (top phote) Joan Cripps, Mark Warner, Linda Dixon and News head chowder chef Judy Coffey.
