the North Shore, Collins misunderstands Dear Editor: Doug Collins in his first scurrilous column about the elderly portrays once more the ignorance which is so characteristic of his writing. I don't know what he does for a living but the people he maligns know all about the value of work, they've been doing it for 40 or 50 years. My retired contemporaries in the industrial world have each probably contributed a thousand times as much real value to the economy as has Collins. Certainly those of us who go back that far, most of today's retirees, were in favor of an adequate income for all . Canadians after retirement ‘or we can remember the appalling poverty of the elderly prior to universal pensions. His despicable comment about -people who did nothing to provide for old age is beneath contempt, most of them are women who grew up in an era when women had not today's employment rights and op- portunities, many people worked without adequate or any pension plans, R.R.S.P.s and CPP have become a major retirement factor only during the past 15 years. The per cent of population over 65 in 1984 was, na- tionally, 10.2, it is higher on small Hall is dumped on Dear Editor: During the fall of ’84 with the help of 2 local women, the Horseshoe Bay Com- munity Hall was given a se- cond lease on life, and once again became a functioning part of our community. _ With three years of back taxes, and several months of arrears Hydro bills to catch up on, the newly elected ex- ecutive along with other volunteers are having a rough go of keeping the building looking as neat and presentable as time and money will allow. During the winter and spr- ing, a clean-up of the sur- rounding grounds gave most of the neighbors no cause for complaint. However — last week someone in the neighborhood saw fit to use the back parking lot of the hall as a dumping station for their refuse. Tuesday, grass-cuttings and Salmon Berry bushes now decorate the lane, leaving the execu- tive no choice but to have it trucked away. Come on local citizens! We need your support to make it until November when maybe with your help and constructive ideas, we can then make a decision on ' its future. Joyce Jackson West Vancouver et business enterprise which comprises a major economic activity on the North Shore must realize and appreciate the stimulus to the economy of retirement spending. The value of the consumer in an increasingly automated production economy is ap- parent, the pensioner as a consumer obviously has a strong impact on business which is probably why many business people have added their voice to the opposition to de-indexing. Many people under the age of 35 share Collins’ myopic view, resenting their share of taxes supporting the security net, by the time they reach 65 over 20 per cent of the population will be that age there will be 1 retiree for every 3 workers, even though they put money into a retirement savings, which is still a good idea, the pro- portion, pensioner to worker will be one to three and will remain unchanged whether or not pensions are gov- ernment funded or provided by investment. In the latter case pensions will depend on money managers investing funds in, for example, automated production facili- ties all over the world, if the investment turns sour the retiree suffers a loss of in- come, if there is by then no Looking Dear Editor: I am really getting sick and tired of your Sunshine Girl feature!
