Curled up in a chair in her cozy, living room, casually dressed, with her hair tied in a loose bun, the attractive designer talks about her line of clothing. Though her fashions are becoming well-known, and are carried throughout Van- couver and Western Canada, Stimpson says she never makes that much money. ‘*] can’t believe the amount of work that goes in- to this industry,’’ she says. ‘‘] don’t think anyone makes that much money. | wanted to offer half decent prices, so my profit margins are small.”’ When Stimpson first started designing, she made holiday wear in silks, usually Hawaiian prints. But Stimp- son adds that the line was very expensive, since she made it on a small scale. ‘‘It was the only way to make a living on that scale. I never wore any of the clothing myself.’’ But more recently, Stimp- son has changed her line into sportswear. With her sports line, the sales have been successful, so the clothes are now manufac- tured and the prices are more reasonable than her first holi- day line. Stimpson says her sewing tume is now taken up with decorating her house, such as sewing big cushions and bags and wind socks which she hangs outside. But Stimpson has sewn for years, and taken what she calls ‘‘fly by night”’ designer courses. ‘‘I read and learned’ as I went.
