Ali I have to do is travel a lot and leave the family at home. Or, bring them along. Either way, | have yards of matenal. Our family is planning a vacation, the whole screaming works of us. Not our usual fly to Maui and flop sort of thing — we're going to “Love Boat” our way from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles for two weeks, with three days in San Juan on the way down and three more in Los Angeles on the way back. Have you ever coped with three teen-aged daughters preparing their wardrobes for THAT? But, I remember well the days when I left three toddlers and a husband at home when I “flew the coop” for a month in Europe or trayel- wise by Ba rbara McCreadie ) South America. You should have seen my checklist. GOVERNMENT STUDIES LEGISLATION Little protection for women OTTAWA (UPC) — federal government is studying legislation to remove wife-beating from the jurisdiction of the family courts and make it a criminal offence, Solicitor General Robert Kaplan said Wednesday. Kaplan told the House of Commons that the changes, proposed in a report by a parliamentary committee Tuesday, was being closely examined by government lawyers. He added that RCMP officers were already being trained to deal with increasing incidents or family violence. New Domocratic Party MP Margaret Mitchell said there were only two con- victions for every 10,000 reported incidents of violence. She suggested that men who assault their wives The should be treated like other assailants. Judy Erola, the minister responsible for the status of women, agreed with the proposal, vowing to push for the legislative change. “I do feel that men who beat their wives should be charged with assault the same way men who beat other people are dealt with,” she told reporters. Under current law, the offence is handled in family court. But the case might not even get that far because the committee found women may be beaten as many as 30 times before they report their husbands to the police. Mitchell said women are being assaulted daily and have little protection. “Battered wives rarely have any refuge,” she said “They have no safe place to A sign of the times PHILADELPHIA (UPI) The city health com missioner says the school board should face the facts of life and consider having public school nurses hand out condoms “as casily as they give out aspirins” In fact, he said. “we belicve condoms are less dangerous to the health of people than are aspirins © But a school = district spokesman said the budgct cant be stretched to cover existing programs. let alone new ones “Not having a condom does not produce chastity,” Dr Stuart Shapiro = said Wendesday at a conference on tecnage pregnancy “Tt produces unwanted babies and Icads to the propagation of venereal discase ” My freezer stands alone as the one piece of equipment essential for an absentee mother. Lasagna? Yep. Lots of it. Frozen pizzas were popular — who cares about food value when you're ten thousand miles away? All you care about is that they all eat. I started with a big, BIG list: 23 dinners, 16 packed lunches and 23 easy-to-make breakfasts. That meant that ! prepared a lot of casseroles. And froze lunchbox sand- wiches. And bought one helluva lot of heat-and-eat rolls. And, lists. The family got used to reading the chart for tomorrow while they were sull trying to figure out the chart for today. Did kid number three remember that it was Thursday and she was in charge of thawing the stew? Likely not. Dad, Grannie or babysitter didn't either so everyone ate grilled go with their children. Police are called on an emergency basis but rarely respond to domestic calls. Charges are aot laid in the courts and there are very few instances of prosecutions.” She said women need immediate action, not “reports, research and conferences.” Erola replied that she would look into increasing the number of shelters for women who have been beaten by their husbands — another key recom- mendation of the com- mittee. Ever come back from a vacation to find 15 assorted frozen casseroles — what-in-hell did they eat while you were gone? Bnan doesn't cook. Re- heating a pizza is a bit much for my financial genius. If all else fails, he bundles the kids in the car and heads for Yic’s. Or McDonalds. The kids, now, cook as well or better than I do. But, if left on their own with nothing by way of a list, they'd probably end up looking like an egg sand- wich. Anyway, it’s nice to be indispensible. I guess. Now, my advice for the parents who are leaving for a couple of weeks holiday: Bring on the junk! Fill your freezer with frozen pizzas, french fmes, hamburger patties, wieners and buns, sweet rolls and juices. Add cans of beans and spaghetti to your cupboard — and don't forget the Hamburger wife-beating and that she was pleased that a recent conference had emphasized the need for action. “There is a great catch-up that needs to be done,” she said. “I have been speaking with my colleagues and I have concluded a lot of consciousness-raising must take place.” Helper. Cheese gets devoured at twice the normal rate, especially slices. Pack in the bacon, eggs and frozen hash- browns. I get so embarrassed when someone looks at my grocery carts prior lo a trip. Who would believe the cartons of cool-whip and ice cream? Three weeks isn’t going to run them down the path to junk-food-itis. If the menu is junky enough, you can be sure that they'll come home to eat it. “Hey, Mom!
