Caring for By DENISE FOWLER In these inflationary times, we are taking better care of things so they last longer and there's no reason why this attitude shouldn't include flowers, according to the Consumer In- formation Service of Florists’ Transworld Delivery. P.T.D. florists point out that with proper care the flowers we receive as gifts or cut from our gardens can last days longer. They offer these tips for prolonging the life and enjoyment of flowers. Water should be added daily to flower arrangement in bright sunlight, under a strong lamp, on the TV set (which generates a lot of heat) or near a_ radiator. Ideally,-you should leave an arrangement in a cool room at night, but not in a draft. Wise flower lovers put bouquets on the floor at night — it’s cooler there. Some flowers in arrange- ments will die faster than others. Th should be removed iminediatcly. If they're left jn too long, they'll shorten the life of the remaining flowers. . When only a few blooms « ' . : lowers | are left, transtet them to a ““different, ‘smaller container where they can continue to bring enjoyment. Unarranged cut flowers should have their stems cut immediately so they can take up water. Use a knife and cut the stem on a slant, except in the case of woody stems, such as chrysanthe- mums, lilac, dogwood or forsythia. The stems of the forsythia should be pounded _with a hammer two or three inches from the bottom. Roses should be placed in water as soon as the stems are cut.
