oa ns ein ete ne NNN cm, em ng ee re cane’ Some pa me mame I FNS = Dear Editor: One of the resolutions which I recently brought before my Council to be submitted to the upcoming U.B.C.M. Conference in September dealt with the need -to have our own Canadian Merchant Marine. If Canada were to build its own merchant marine, some five to ten thousand new jobs could be provided on the North Shore. The economic spin-off, running into tens of millions of dollars annually, would be ai tremendous boost to the economy of the whole community. Today, unfortunately, Canada has no merchant marine worthy of the name. In 1978 the Canadian deep sea fleet consisted of 185 ships with a total tonnage of 6.8 million. But only 74 of these ships. with a tonnage of 805,755 (12 per cent of the total) were under Canadian registry. Furthermore only 57 of these Canadian owned vessels, with a tonnage of 669,760 (10 per cent of the total ) were built in Canada. Our good old Canadian Pacific is one of the worst offenders. All of its 34 ships with a tonnage of 2.1 million Demonstrators ‘flaunted law’ Dear Editor: After reading your article, “DISTRICT RAPS R.C.M.P. OVER SCHOOL DEMONSTRATION” I support District council stand wholeheartedly . Fhe R.C.M.P_ report stated “THERE WAS NO GREAT INCONVENIENCE TO THE PUBLIC.” Y was held up in this “BLOCKADE?” and harassed verbally by an “EDU- CATOR”, and consequently was several minutes late for work. Would you not say I was inconvenienced? By what rights do these demonstrators have to illegally block a public road and then have the left wing members of council condone their actions? In a democracy laws must be obeyed by all: this also includes council members and groups with vested interests. A democracy will not work if groups consider themselves above the law and consequently flaunt in the presence of our children. B. Pinkerton North Vancouver (31 per cent of the total) are under foreign registry and employ foreign crews. Isn’t there something radically . wrong when Canadian shipowners use Canadian ports built with public funds, and make handsome profits carrying our natural resources and manufactured goods _ for export and yet do not pay income tax in Canada nor hire Canadian crews? To make matters worse, Canada pays out $3 billion annually to foreign shipowners, which con- tributes greatly to our in- ternational balance of payments deficit. I think we have every right to demand of Ottawa that it take steps to : (a) repatriate Canadian owned ships and bring them under Canadian registry, (b) through the existing shipbuilding industry and/or awe ary eran yond M rchant ma ine a'must’ a Crown corporation or both, undertake the building _. of a Canadian Merchant _ ‘will be > . Fegistered in Canada and Marine that employ Canadian crews. (c) apply the in- ternationally accepted 40/40/20 formula under which at least 40 per cent of our exports and imports would be carried in Canada’s own ships.
