By JOHN SCHREINER - Two British Columbia wineries are marketing a vintage white wine from the _ classic Johannisberg Riesling grape. But the wines are dramatically dif- ferent. The difference underlines a point sometimes made by Tom Hoenisch, the winemaker at Casabello Wines in Penticton: “Wine- making is 60% an art and 40% a science”. Hoenisch made Casabello’s 1977 Johan- nisberg Riesling ($2.95 at the winery and available as well in liquor stores). The other is Andres 1976 Johannisberg Riesling ($4.00 at the Port Moody winery only), made by winemaker Ron Taylor. The two winemakers started with grapes pur- chased from new vineyards in Washington's Yakima Valley. The grape. which is also called the white riesling (pronounced reez-ling), is the leading grape in the vineyards of Germany and Alsace in northern France. The grape is grown in other wine regions around the world, seldom achieving the excellence it does in Germany's climate. That has helped growers to put in ex- perimental plots of white riesling in the southern end of the valley. Both Taylor and Hoenisch have made laboratory scale batches of wine from these plantings. They are confident that the grape is successful in the Okanagan and that the Johannisberg Rieslings they make in the 1980's will be home-grown. No doubt there will be some confusion between wines from that grape and from the widely-grown Okanagzn riesling. The latter is not related to the noble German grape. Thus, the Andres riesling contains 9.5% to 10% alcohol and just a touch of sweetness. _Hoenisch -- who was raised in Alsace where his father was winemaker - made his riesling in the manner of an_ Alsation riesling. Fermentation was allowed to run its course. Consequently, the Casabello wine is crisply dry and has 11.5% to 12% alcohol. “I like my wines per- sonally as dry. as possible”, Hoenisch says. “But it’s a Thomas Appleton of Ot lawa. former historian for the Ministry of ‘Transport, whe tas detailed the colorful Iustory oof the 160 ships deproted oon the stamps msued oan othe | four year series Numerous fine drawings and heretotore unpublished Or BOOK WORMS open Paporbackh HMardbac ks 1247 Granville St. Van. Both wines were made in limited quantities of 500 cases each and both are nearly sold out. Andres likely will release another 500 cases 1977 Johannisberg Riesling late this winter and has the equivalent of 600 cases of the 1978 vintage in its tanks. Casabello will be releasing about 3,000 cases of the 1978 vintage late in 1979. . Of course, the styles of these two wines will con- tinue different, allowing consumers to suit their tastes. The imaginative host can serve the wines readily at the same occasion.
