For the second consecutive year the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) will be sponsoring an architectural competition to select a design for this year's PNE Dream Home. Last year 69 architects par- ticipated in the program which saw quite a number of new and imaginative design solutions. The high exposure of the PNE Dream Home creates an opportu- nity to address current concerns for conservation and changing lifestyles not possible in normal market housing. The recognized need for archi- -tectural design also reflects grow- ing market sophistication, the feed to deal with high land values, and deSign for new build- ing technologies. “This is a unique opportunity not only for the well-established but also for up-and-coming ar- chitects to showcase their talents and abilities,” stated fair planning committee chairperson Ellie O'Day. .The winner will be awarded $7,000 plus the commission to see the project through to completion. Prizes of $5,000 and $3,000 will be awarded to second and third place designers, respectively. The competition is open to all architects registered in British Columbia and has been approved by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia in accordance with the “Code for Conduct of Architectural Competitions.” Randle’ Iredale, MAIBC FRAIC, is the professional ad- visor to the competition. Information has been distributed to all registered B.C. architects and the competition closing date was Feb. 28. The winners will be announced on April 6 during an awards ceremo- ay in the PNE’s B.C. Pavillion. The house will be relocated to Imperial Village, an Imperial De- velopment Co. Ltd. subdivision situated near S2nd Street in Tsawwassen across from the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club. The lot is approximately 100 metres to the west of Imperial Park, a four-acre recreation area that includes a baseball diamond, basketball hoops, children’s play area and a large expanse of green area. The fot backs on to agricultural land with an unobstructed view of the North Shore mountains. The Dream Home program is one of the many exciting events that draw people to the PNE’s annual provincial fair year after year. This year, tickets for the prize package will be available by mail to areas outside the Lower Mainland.
