Once back in B.C., the couple purchased. their’ home in West Vancouver and commenced transforming “our rock in the wilderness,” as Dien refers to it. Together, with their love of nature and beauty, Dien and Alphons cre- ated tranquil, terraced gardens and quiet walking paths amid natural evergreens, carefully chosen scrubs, goldfish ponds, and an abundance of colourful _ flowerbeds. After completing their landscaping and home renova- tions, the Picters relaxed ona four-month car tip to Mexico, then later, 2 year’s trip to Europe. Over a fiod of eight years her husband 's health deterio- rated and in 1980 at age 85, her beloved Alphons died. Dien carried out her hus- band’s wishes, that his ashes be placed in the specially built cairn with a weathervane on top, placed ona high point on their property overlooking the spectacular view of che Hawe Sound, amidst the tranquility of the trees, shrubs and flow- ers he so loved. For nine years, Dien remained a widow. The she met her future second hus- band, Reverend Gordon East. They married in 1989 but after only four short happy years, he passed away in 1993. Like Alphons, Dien granted Gordon’s request that his ashes be placed in the cairn along with those of Alphons, in the place where the awe- some, peaceful view meant so much to both men. She had no children on her own, but through her mar- riag es, she has a total of 47 ildren and spouses, d- children. great-grand: ildren and a few great, great gran children. m Dien is very invelved with the Inglewood Nursing Home and has been for 26 years. She still takes a trip to Europe every year, Dien has just finished writing her memoirs, entitled Times of My Life, which is expected to be published this month. Having lived in so many unusual and intriguing places, and travelled extensively, Dien’s book is an easy and interesting read.
