24 - North Shore News -— Friday, January 14, 2000 iT Recently Roseway Travel sentor corporate cousultant Elaine Vieira bad the oppor- tunity to travel with a group to Thailand. Below is ber first-hand account of the Navember 799 trip. OUR first stop was Bangkok, a city so alive no che ever scems to sleep. To my surprise, the skyline of the city was as cosmepoli- tan as any other major city centre, with its skyscrapers, gigantic billboards, and mam- moth-sized hotels. Our group arrived at Bangkok Airport via Hong Kong at approximately 1 a.m. local time and the airport was bustling with so many people, it seemed more like 1 o'clock in the afternoon, During our 40-minute transfer from the airport to our hotel, the Imperial Queen’s Park, it was even 7 af THE SALVATION ARMY } CHURCH (OS West {2¢h Sc. The traffic !ooked like your average, afterneon rush hour. Motorcycles and scooters weaved in and out of traffic in colourful blurs. Taxi cabs of assorted colours also filled the streets everywhere you looked. Street vendors were still out, selling late night snacks, Our first class hotel was located in a central area of the 714 - 20th Street, W. Van. One of the major attractions of the city was the king's palace, other- wise known as che Grand Palace, about 45 minutes away by regular taxi. You could alse take the alternative local cabs called “tuk tuks"” — a scooter with a small open cab built on to the back where riders could jump on and off. Throughout the city you could see the tops of many temples colouriully adorned red, green and gold, peering over the gates and stone fences that surrounded them. For aff the exciting night life and action, Phatphong Area was the place to be, and it seemed even busier than downtown Bangkok itself. Here was where street vendors were in close quarters with the shoppers in one concentrated ar¢a of the marketplace and Sv. Next on our journey was Koh Samui, a small island off the east coast of the Malay Peninsula and by far my favourite place in Thailand. Much tess developed than Bangkok and Phuket, it retains all the charm and beauty an island haven can have with still enough activity on it to keep oneself as busy as you wished. Ceconut palin trees cover much of the island. Long strips of white powder sand beaches beckon vou at Chaweng Beach, (one of the more central areas for tourists) and the crystal clear, warm, blue water surrounds you as far as you can. see. As one might guess, diving and snorkeling are big on this island and the night time activities included bargaining with the local vendors and even night clubbing in an open-air, hut-style reggae bar built right on the water. Tuk- tuks and motorcycles again were the most common: forms of transportation, but the traf- fic was much less congested than Bangkok or Phuket. Next On our itinerary was Phuket, a blend of both island beauty and bustling city. Parts of this island allow you to bask on the beach away from it all in some of the highest rated hotel resorts in the world, (ours was the spectacu- lar Dusit Laguna Resort) or le The Dao j_ Mention this Ad for o discount Ta Valey Church & Sunday Celebration January 16, 2000 Two services at 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. Fastor Owen Scott will be speaking Topic ~ "Living in a World of Anger" (Full children’s program offered in beth services) Lynn Valley Full Gorpet Church, 160 E. 29th St. North Vancouver, 8.C.
