8 -. Sunday, February 23, 1997 -- North Shore News Healih service Shifts | Plan outlines three new public centres for North Shore By lan Nable News Reporter THE North Shore Health Board has embarked on a new course of delivery for some ser- vices in North and West Vancouver. Board CEO Inge Schamborzki said Wednesday that three “community heaith centres” will be ser up on the North Shore with the goal of integrating health board services for clients. Residents will be able to walk-in, call- in and make appointments to the centres. The outlets will offer a comprehensive range of coordinated health promotion, illness prevention, rchabilitation and community support services. They won’t be mini-hospitals, but they are expected to decrease the load on Lions Gate Hospital. “It’s going to take us a little while to work out the details but in terms of the concept we have a clear idea of what we want to do,” she said. “We are working out the various steps in how we are geing to get there.” Although the health board is still try- ing to determine locations for the sites, Schamborzki said there will likely be a Now You Have AChoice In the we Lower Mainland & The Fraser Valley tonto secu af your own hore e seer eaten funeral costs Call for free brochure, information or costs Advantage Cremation - | & Funeral Services™ Vancouver 454-0305 Sheers from 519” per pleated fi. Through the centres, residents will be able to access the services of heath-board- funded agencies such as North Shore Health, North Shore Home Support Services and North Shore Community Mental Health as weil as the services pro- vided by the Ministry for Children and Families. Schambozzki says her $166-millton-a-year board expects the move to com- munity health centres to save Maney. Cash savings will come from an anticipated reduc- tion of lease payments. Schamborzki expects inte- grated staffing for the difter- ent services will iead to sup- port-service savings in areas such as finance and informa- tion systems. For example, Schamborzki said cach agency has an individual payroll system. Under the community services, she foresees one payroll system. Some jobs may become redundant but identifying what those jobs are will take another six weeks, she said. Schamborzki added positions won't all be redundant at once because it takes time to put new processes in place. Schamborzki expects the use of the Lions Gare Hospital emergency room to decrease after the centres open. Other areas that have community health centres report up to a 30% decrease in the use of hospital emergency rooms, but the decrease expected at Lions Gate has yet to be determined, she added. The community health centres will not be open for 24 hours initially, although Schamborzki expects some services such as home sup- port wil! be available 24 hours. Schamborzki envisions a west side heaith centre with approximately 34 health board employees in the cen- tre and 80 workers in the community who will use the centre as a base. Numbers anticipated ‘for the central centre are 60 people in the centre and 140 in the community, while the eastern centre expects to have 20 in-centre and 20 outside health workers. A decision on how to integrate alcohol and drug ser- vices will be made by early March. Schamborzki hopes to have at least onc community open before the end of 1997.
