By Robert Galster Contributing Writer When a cat breaks down it is usually becatise one of the car's parts has broken down. Regardless of whether it is the transmission, the water pump or the allernator, the end result is the same, A trip to the local garage where a mechanic will diagnose the problem and fix it. However, it is rare for mechan- ics to fix a part or even replace it with a new one. The faulty part is usually replaced with one that has been fixed elsewhere. Curt Larsen of North Vancouver Automotive Service says that for parts such as alternators, water pumps and brake calipers it is com- mon practice for mechanics to exchange the parts. "An exchange involves installing a part that has been rebuilt and dis- counting the already lower price of the used replacement part by exchanging it for the broken one, The trade-in value of any part is established by its availability on the market The rarer in item the higher a price iO will fetch, OF course, very rire toms will also usually con mand a high price to start with, The one obvious advantage to the motorist is the increased afford: ability of exchanged parts, “A tot of the parts are not even feasible to buy new.” said Larsen. “For an exchange part, a fot of the time you are looking at, easily, a 50% savings in using a rebuilt item over a new part.” Larsen adds that there is lite if any down side to using the rebuilt parts for the customer. “We're finding that most of the re-manufactured parts are getting as much longevity as factory parts.” A less obvious benefit of exchanging parts is that it consti- tutes recycling, thus making it envi- ronmentally friendly. ¢ WARRANTY APPROVED ° 10-MINUTE OIL CHANGE a4 U RRAPIDIUBE ORIVE-THRU ON. Check fluid levels before summer vacations THE PROPER working order of any car is dependent on sufficient levels of various fluids that are responsi- ble for tasks as varied as cooling and lubricating. The five basic By Rebert Galster fluids to monitor Contributing Writer are coolant or anti- = freeze, engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid. Frank Redavid of Econo Brake and Muffler says it’s important for drivers to check all the fluids, not just the engine oil. With summer and its warm temperatures, he adds that checking the anti-freeze or coolant levels is espe- cially important. This can be done by checking the anti-freeze retum reservoir usually located near the windshield wiper fluid container under the hood. In addition to maintaining proper levels of all fluids * in the car, it is also necessary to change them at regular intervals. Redavid suggests the radiator and power steering fluids be changed regularly at least once a year. The brake fluid should be changed every 20,000 kilometres and the engine oil should be changed every 3,000 to 4,000 kilometres. If a long road trip is part of a motorist’s itinerary, Redavid suggests changing all five basic fluids before setting out regardless of when it was last done. When changing the various fluids, one thing a motorist dces not have to worry about is picking out the best brand. “They're pretty well all standard industry right now,” said Redavid. “They're al! good.” on oe ae me em ome ome um ta EN Foe SOT ee een EM Som Oe OL ee SE Oy * Tune-up ¢ Check Battery & Charging System « Change Oil/Filter ¢ Chack Fluid Levels * inspect All Hoses ¢ Pressure Test Cooling System * Check Lights os * Inspect Windshield Wipers * Inspect Brakes * Inspect & Rotate Tires AND ACCESSORIES A © NORTH SHORE MAZDA ¢ Road Test Wheel Alignment *NOT VALID WITH ANY OTHER OFFER AirCarre REPAIR CENTRE oe een Lie eee ee PLA a 700 Block Marine Drive, North Vancouver SERVICE DEPARTMENT QQ '7_AA5Q PHONE FOR AN APPOINTMENT REGENCY AUTO GROUP
