~ overoaive WHAT IS the single most _ Significant color of the 90s? : Green of course. Because “green is the official color representing environmental- . ly-friendly materials, it had “become a dominant hue in many prodicts, including fashions, stationeries, elec- tronic goods, and interior _ furnishings. on Is it the most popular color in 7 automobiles too? . “A quick phone call to giant paint ; supplier DuPont contirmed my sus- ‘ picion that green is one of the hottest’colors in today’s vehicles. {Back in'1989, our research and ysis ‘led us to predict that green would be “the”, color for the next few" years, however, we didn’ t pre-" dict this meteoric leap,” says : ‘Robert S. Daily, DuPont’s automo- tive fi finishes ¢ color marketing man- ccording to DuPont’ $ recent: * ‘survey, the popularity of this envi- ronmentally- friendly color has risen considerably over the past couple of years. It is now the top choice mong the sport/compact car buy- ers, for example, with over 16% of ‘the total marketshare. . In luxury cars, full/intermediate-_ ized vehicles, and truck/vans, “igreen is the second most popular. color; trailing slightly behind white. “If the sharp increase in demand for green (popularity doubled in 1993), and declining interest in white (down 4% from previous year) are any indication, it's only a matter of tome before green becomes the top color in every vehicle category. “The fact that green is overtitk- ing white indicates that security is the big issue now, In these modern times, people are looking for more security” says Roseanne Forde, fashion director of women’s appar- el at DuPont. “In addition to being the color of the environment, green represents balance, nermality, and security.” Even though white is slowly los- ing marketshare to green, it is still the overall champion in automobile colors, claiming almost 20% of the marketshare, Green’s overall shure is (59, ahead of third-place medi- um red at 10.5%, bright red at 8.8%, and fifth-place black at 7.2%, DuPont says that while green is expected to stay strong for many years to come, purple and gold tones may emerge over the next few years as the “hot” colors. How do they know that? _ “The color trend in automobiles closely follows the fashion indus- try,” says Michelle Huot, color marketing specialist at DuPont's Canadian office in Ajax, Ontario. “By analyzing and tracking the fashion fields, we are able to pre- dict change in consumers’ taste,” _ She added. DuPont’s analysis also shows that bi-color hues will become - more popular over the next several - . years. Bi-color effects (or “pearles- cent” colors) are paint finishes - - whose hues actually change when viewed from different angles. Pear! white, for example, looks | white from a distance but in reality ‘- _-Teflects many shades of colors. . “ when seen at an angle under bright ‘fight. The pearl colors were only » available on expensive cars a few years ago. Thanks to the advances - in color technology, the cost of pro- ducing these high-tech colors has dropped considerably, and now many 1994 cars feature them. © Ford’s new ‘94 Mustang sports .. car, for example, i is one of those cars that features this interesting new color scheme. The bi-colors are exciting and different, but keep in mind that they are also much more difficult to repair and “match” should a bi- color-finished car become damaged in an accident, Not every body shop is able to properly handle this multi-layered, multi-colored paint finish at this time. DuPont is already talking lo car companies about the next genera- tion of colors that are expected to arrive in the near future. It is cur-. rently showing automakers over 150 new colors — which include the purple, gold tints and bi-color effects — to be used starting in the 1997 model year cars, So if you want to stay ahead of the times, be daring and buy a pur- ple, pink or ‘gold- -colored vehicles.
