I KNOW a young woman who is suicidal, but don’t be alarmed. Her boyfriend didn’t just dump her nor is her teenage life falling to pieces. By Danica Riley Contributing Writer She is a freestyle skier whose death-defying acts border on the brink of insanity. Carol Rifey is a promising young athlete on the Blackcomb Freestyle Ski Team. She finds it absolutely exhilarat- ing to bounce over huge mounds of snow (called moguls) that wreak havoc on her knees. Later in the day she will soar off ramps to con- duct some maniacal manocuvre in flight. Oh, the joys of freestyle ski- ing! Ai 15, the Handsworth Secondary student has already proven herself on both the provin- cial and national circuits. This past weekend Riley cleaned up at the B.C. Freestyle Championships on her home slope at Blackcomb. _ After a week of training and competing, she arrived back on the North Shore with five medals, two trophies and two free trips. Riley won a bronze for “best run of the day” and won gold medals in the following categories: juvenile aerials and moguls, and women's overall aerials and moguls. She also won a one-week free stay at John Smart’s Blackcomb Summer Ski Camp and an invita- tion to the 1995 Canadian Winter Games in Jasper, Alberta. As the undefeated gold medallist in Canadian juvenile aerials for the past two years, top-calibre competi- tion is nothing new to Riley. She also won a silver medal in women’s . juvenile moguls in the 1994 Juvenile Canadian Nationals. - Riley has come a long way because of her undying dedication Vancouver THE VANCOUVER Inter- national Marathon is. looking for volunteers to staff the North Shore section of the course.
