34 ~ Friday, April 30. 1993 - North Shore News Carson students test trouble-shooting skills | New ferry fares aimed at reducing overheight congestion COMMERCIAL AND over-height vehicles using the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal this summer season will be forced to pay a 10% premium in order to reduce congestion at the West Vancouver ferry terminal. BC Ferry Corp, (BCFC) spokesman Erin Caldwell said commercial and over-height vehicles are charged different rates depending on a vehicle's length. She added that the 10% premium will be applied dur- ing the summer weekend period from noon Fridays to Sundays and including holi- day Mondays. On Monday, April 26, the BCFC introduced seasonal fares on major routes which, Caldwell said, will result in seasonal increases and a first-time-ever reduction for passenger and commercial vehicles during certain times of the year. Under the new structure, the ‘“‘shoulder’’ season — which runs from March 16 to June 15, Sept. 16 to Nov. 15 and Dec. 16 to Jan. 2 — fare for passenger vehicles will be $21.50 and in the peak travel season, which runs from June 16 to Sept. 15, the fare will be $22.50. Seasonal fares will also ap- ply to commercial and other tariffs, Caldwell said that by mov- ing to seasonal fares, the BCFC is adopting a system commonly used throughout the travel and tourism in- dustries. “Recognizing the need to be more financially efficient and to continue to finance system improvements, we've taken @ good business prac- tice and applied it to our ferry system,’’ said BCFC president and chief executive officer Frank Rhodes. ‘Seasonal fares are equitable and more closely reflect our true operating costs,’ added Rhodes. Travellers using the Mid- Island Express between June 16 and Sept. 15 can take ad- vantage of the $19 low- season fare on the If p.m. and midnight sailings from Tsawwassen and the 4:30 am. and 5:30 a.m. sailings from Nanaimo. Seasonal fares will not be introduced on minor routes, Instead, there will be an across-the-board increase of 6%, with an additional ad- justment on the Tsawwassen-Gulf [sland route to deal with inequities. The cost of an assured loading ticket book will in- crease by $3 per ticket to $485 a book. That charge is now in effect. Adult passenger rates will rise from $5.50 to $6, but the BCFC will continue to offer B.C. residents over the age of 65 free passage on the Van- couver Island-mainiand, Sun- shine Coast and Gulf Islands routes from Monday to Thursday, except on statutory holidays.
