Hunger strike photos dangerous to families? Dear Editor: As a North Shore resident and lawyer experienced in immigration matters, | took particular interest in your news report in the March 12 edition of the North Vancouver Iranian refugee claimants who are on hunger strike before the Helmceken Street Immigration Of- fice. It is evidently an important public issue and you gave it balanced and insightful coverage. However, I was surprised that you ran such vivid photographs of some of them — even a closeup of the named Mr. ¥. — from which they may be very casily identified. Was no consideration given to the risk of danger to them and to remaining family members in repressive tran, from such explicit publicity? You should know that a publicized photograph may iden- tify any of them to Iranian con- sular officials or their agents in Vancouver who will casily relay the information to the lranian government in Tehran. Their publicized refugee claims will. cause international embar- rassment to the government of Iran. You will appreciate that no country wishes to be seen as an alleged abuser of human rights. The government may use the story to detain and interrogate remaining family members in Iran or to persecute the claimants if they ultimately must return to Iran, The risk you create is that they will become targeted. Mt may be true that by going on hunger strike they expose themselves to further risk. But that is their's to weigh out and consider. . Whereas the onus for responsi- ble journalism lies on’ you, in this case, Lo not exacerbate that risk. Which I think you have unfor- tunatcly done. Richard A. Vanderkooy North Vancouver Editor's note: The hunger strike was staged to focus public atten- tion on the strikers’ demands. The strikers abandoned any rights to anonymity when they staged their very public action. In a democratic country, it is the responsibility of a free press to cover all the news occurring in local communities, not just dhe news that some people want covered, Savenging not welcome Dear Editor: ; A already ‘get three irieks (sane day, weekly) cranking arcund my © very quiet neighborhood, and it's a darn nuisance! We are a group of over 100 responsible citizens who wish to retain.some form of con- trolled residential burning in West Vancouver as a means of maintaining and preserving the evergreen trees in our community. These magnificent giants drop many huge branches in the winter storms into our gardens, There exists no program of wastewoou removal in our municipality and the conse- quent backlog of waste mate- rial has been dumped into our parks, streams, easements, railway lines and the sea. We advocate strictly con- trolled burning of non- compostable woody wastes. Smoke can be greatly reduced by ensuring that the fuel is bone-dry and the bur- ning done only after Oct. | on days when the air quality index is low and there is no temperature inversion. We consider the chipping alternatives to be unaecep- table because engine-driven chipper exhausts produce nitrous oxides. Back-yard burning has become the visible scapegoat for many forms of pollution — we all know the car causes 85% of all pollution on the Lower Mainland.
