LAW FIRM EYES CAP STUDENTS A MAJOR B.C. law firm has set its sights on Capilano College students studying to become legal secretaries. The law firm of Russell and DuMoulin has announced that it will give $7,500 to the Capilano College Foundation to establish a perpetual fund that will assist stu- dents in the legal secretarial pro- gram. “Our reasoning behind par- ticipating in the scholarship pro- gram was to ensure the life of the (legal secretarial) program,*’ said personnel manager Peany Harvie. **We are a supporter of the col- lege." Harvie had recommended to the law firm’s executive committee that the scholarship be created. “We are a big law firm, 140 Jawyers, and as a result we have a large number of secretaries. Many of them are Capilano College graduates,’’ said Harvie. She added that legal secretarial work is a highly demanding job and that Capilano College gradu- ates who work for Russell and DuMoulin are very well trained. The 103-year-old firra practises all kinds of law and is associated with several other large law firms in Canada. In other news, Bruce Themp- son, owner. of TSI Telequip Ser- vices, one of the Lower Mainland’s largest communication equipment firms, has donated $2,500 to the Capilano College Foundation to create bursaries for tourism students. Thompson said the tourism in- dustry can generate significant profits for many seemingly unrelated North Shore businesses. “Tourism brings money to the province. It’s new money, not money that’s being turned around again,” said Thompson. Traini THE VANCOUVER Community College City Centre campus is of- fering a computer education pro- gram suitable for people with disabilities. HIGH TECH Introduction to Micro-Com- puters is available through the col- lege’s Community and Career Education Program. Said department head Holly Cole, “We have students who have physical disabilities, as well as students with learning disabilities, mental handicaps and brain-injury. This part-time course is for individuals who want to learn how to use a microcom- puter but find other courses too fast-paced. We also offer smiall- size classes and lots of opportuni- ty to practise and review.” The program has been made possible through donations and equipment from several groups.
