MAILBOX Development robs taxpayers Dear Editor: 1 was dumbfounded by an arti- cle I read in the Feb. 5 North Shore News. ‘ The article was titled ‘Band announces major development” and concerned the potential de- velopment of townhouses in the Band’s Reserve No. 3. What drew my attention to it was the opening statement that the Band has ‘‘tcamed up with Asian parcners."” Reading further, I was shocked to find out that the pro- ject will benefit from tax advan- tages and ‘ederal funding. That foreign developers will di- rectly profit from government funding I find extremely disturb- ing. We are already faced with a steadily increasing tax burden due to government waste as well as the ballooning federal deficit. The time for favoritism to special groups at the expense of the taxpayers must end. Canadian taxpayers are seeing an ever larger amount of their wages eaten up in the form of taxes, both direct, and indirect. l see no problem with the Bur- rard (Tsleil’waututh) Indian Band choosing to develop its own land with whomever it sees fit. Howev- er, I must take exception to the fact that the taxpayer must bear some of the burden, especially when foreign investors will reap benefits from tax dollars. Let this development proceed on its own merit without dipping into the pockets of the Canadian taxpayer. Robert A. Chapman North Vancouver Alternative forestry methods untried Dear Editor: Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! Rob Kyle (Mailbox, Jan. 15), in attempting to marginalize those of us who believe there’s a better way to look after our drinking water supply areas, fails to realize that he’s promoting the ‘‘flakiest” management system of all! That is, to build roads on steep moun- tainsides, establish hundreds of clearcuts; slashourn and establish artificial forests (plantations) in a tainforest water supply area. The environmentally damaging effects of such a regime — which is precisely what has unfolded in our water supply areas over the last 30 years are well- documented in the scientific litera- ture that Mr. Kyle evidently reveres. As for saying that alternative forestry methods such as selection management systems are largely unproven — this is not so. They may be largely untried in B.C., but they have been used and proven valid for over a century in parts of Switzerland, France, Austria and Germany, that have Local canvassers thanked Open letter to canvassers, zone captains and residenis of the North Shore: On behalf of the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped (NSAMH), I am writing to extend our sincere ap- preciation for your continuing support.
