Sun Awareness Week focuses on damaging ultraviolet rays THE CANADIAN Dermatology Association (CDA) has declared June 3-9 Sun Awareness Week to focus attention on the increasing incidence of skin cancer in Canada, More than 46,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year with the major cause of skin cancer being overexposure to the sun’s ultravio- let rays. Anyone dorn today faces a one im seven risk of developing skin cancer during their lifetime. The most common forms of skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) are usually disfiguring, painful and slow-developing. Deaths from these types of cancer are rare. However, a Jess common form of skin cancer, melanoma, tends to spread through the body quick- ly, in a matter of just weeks or months, and is responsible for the majority of skin cancer deaths. This year, approximately 526 people in B.C. will develop melanoma and 70 will die from it. The incidence of melanoma is in- creasing at a faster rate than any other cancer in the province, and that is why the Canadian Der- matology Association is concen- trating on early detection and prevention in this year’s cam- paign. Said Dr. Jason Rivers, director of CDA’s sun awareness and skin cancer screening program: ‘*When skin cancers are detected early, there is an extremely high cure rate. We hope to encourage indi- viduals to act quickly and see their doctor immediately if they notice any of the following skin prob- lems: lumps, patches, moles or wart-like growths, which are either changing in size, color shape or surface, or for any sores which do not keal within a month.” Skin cancer is preventable. Some simple precautions that can be taken to lessen the risk of this disease are: °@Minimize sun exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.; * Shade your skin with a hat, shirt and other protective clothing; *Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (sun pro- tection factor) of at least 15, which screens out as much as possible of the sun’s UVA and UVB rays; e Protect your children. Since 1987, when hairdressing was offered as a career prepara- tion program, employment pro- spects have been good, according to Ratcliffe Hood. “Hairdressing has always been very good, very high,”’ she says. “The turnover is very quick and there are so many areas."’ DON'T START SUMMER WITHOUT HIGHLIGHTS the HAIR COMPANY 4984 LONSDALE AVE. NORTH VANCOUVER POO crease the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. According to Rivers, anyone worried about skin cancer should consult a doctor right away. “Early detection can save your life. For melanoma, there is a direct relationship between the thickness of a tumor and the long-term survival of a patient. if we remove the tumor while it is stil! a thin growth which has not penetrated deeply into the skin, the cancer is unlikely to have spread through the body. Once it spreads, the chances of longterm survival decrease considerably.”" For more information about skin cancer and protecting your skin from overexposure to the sun, contact your local der- matologist or family doctor.
