Do what police say, even if they are wrong LAST Sunday I read a story on the front page of the North Shore News about a lady in West Van. who had the police point their guns at her. I do feel sorry for her in that particular situation. It is unfortunate that police offi- cers do need to act this way given today’s violent crimi- nals and their total disregard of others. It is impossible for the police to know what they are up against when responding to a call of this nature. A neighbour sees two boys attempting to break in to a house and calls the police. The police arrive and see two boys matching the description jum ping into a vehicle, Past experience tells the officers that this vehicle could be a get-away car and could be stoien. They sur- round the vehicle and leave it nowhere to #0; a possible chase is averted. The perpe- trators are brought out of the vehicle wt gunpoint and handcuffed. The scene is now secure. One problem: these aren’t hardened criminals, this a mother driving her kids to soccer practice. So now dis we say to the police that you screwed up and never stop anybody again, of course not. In this case both parties were right: the police for the action they took and the family for feeling upset about the way they were treated by the officers. Jn all cases the police are more right because they are in control, I have been in simi- lar circumstances and it is very difficult at first, but as the story becomes clear then everything usually calms down. Late one night I was helping friends clear out an office space in Vancouver, A neighbour had called the police to report a BRE in Prog EPeSs, When I walked out the dour carrying a big box I svas knocked down on the ground with friends and was told to lic face down with my hands out to the sides. I was searched and hand- cuffed while a huge German Warren Vignal & sound shepherd was growling and barking inches from my face. After the officer checked “If you comply you will certainly be a lot better off than resisting because you feel you are right.” what was in the boxes they stood us up and removed the handcuffs. We were taking, our the garbage. We had a good laugh with the officers and they shook our hands and raced offto another call. [did not call to make a complaint even though my hand was scraped while being forced down, If you are approached by the police in a takedown situation do exactly what they tell you. ‘Do not argue, do not throw vour hands in the air, and do not reach into your pocket and pull out your wallet. That’s how people get shot accidentally! If you comply you will certainly be alot better off than resisting because you feel you are right. You know you are right but the police don’t know until you can tell them. The police have a tough job to do and as a law-abiding citi- zen you need to give them as much assistance as possi- Selected Home SOFA reg $1379 SALE $899 3 PIECE PINE ENTERTAINMENT UNIT eg $2499 SALE $1899 FREE LEATHER LOVESEAT with purchase of the sofa (2 sets only) PE he OAK & PINE Quality Home Furnishings 1389 Main St., North Vancouver 985-8460 Open 7 days, Fri tit 8 pm (Near 2nd Narrows Bridge} Ample parking in rear, . .
