Thirty-eight teams of local stu- dents put their collective. minds to the task of solving various pro- blems at the recent North Shore 1988 regional finals of the Olym- pics of the Mind competition. Fifteen Delta teams also com- peted in their regional finals at the event, hosted March 19, by Schooi District 44 at Sutherland Second- ary School. Regional finalists go on to com- pete at the provincial finals being . held at Sutherland April 16. Orga- nizers expect at least 1,000 people in attendance with over 90 teams from seven regions in the province participating. School kids from kindergarten to Grade 12 worked to solve pro- blems including aircraft: construc- tion for the flight category; design- ing a. submersible vessel with femote. arms to. collect artifacts - and sea samples from an imaginary ‘Atlantis for the Atlantis category; designing and constructing a -balsa wood structure to hold a maximum amount of weight for the straddle category; create a musical. scene from a given list of classic books, stories and plays for the classics, | showtime category; bring to. life well-known cartoon characters: in live skit and graphic cartoon form for the. comics category... © Rob.
