Mailbox EEE Lc Letter on 911 ‘misleading’ Dear Editor: I don’t krow who A.S. MacKenzie is (Mailbox, May 10), or by what expertise he feels com- pelled to advise the residents of the North Shore who may be in need of emergency medical help, but he is misleading them. 911 has its good qualities, and it has faults, however, that is not the issue. | wonder if A.S. MacKenzie would call an ambulance if his home were ablaze? I doubt it, but using his logic, that would seem to be his course of action. Granted, there are more fire halls than am- bulance stations on the North Shore, hence the shorter response times; common sense tells us that. - In the capacity of my job I make - several calls a month for emergen- cy ambulances. I can say in all honesty that in 15 years all those calls have been answered before the third ring. If A.S. MacKenzie could see the ambulance dispatch office, he would realize that it is fully staffed and technically able to handle the volume of calls. Both emergency services, fire and ambulance, strive to work as a team on the North Shore. We are fortunate to have highly trained people in both services, including their dispatchers. Each service ad- vises the other, depending on the nature of the emergency, and they back each other up whenever it is necessary. For reasons of his own, A.S. MacKenzie seems bent on pitting these services one against the other. Let them do their jobs. Support their efforts to work as a team, instead of giving the residents of the North Shore the wrong advice. Don’t you realize that by caus- ing someone to doubt or hesitate, you could full well be causing fur- ther injury, or death?
