Transit which provides transportation to handi- capped people who are unable to . : use the regular bus system. However, the assistance that North Shore HandyDART is able to provide is totally inadequate to meet the needs of the community. The requests for service far outweigh what they can provide. I have been trying unsuccessfully “§ since last June to get HandyDART service for my son and eight other children who reside on the North Shore. Thése children are neurologically handicapped and attend Kenneth Gordon School in. Burnaby. I am sure that there are many more people out there who * have also been unable to obtain. ‘service. . ’ But there may be a possibility of _ improved service. The Custom Transit Department of B.C. Tran- . sit has requested two additional vehicles tobe made available to North Shore HandyDART and the additional funds to operate them. With North Shore HandyDART operating now with seven vehicles an_ additional two vehicles would mean an increase in service by 28 per cent. ’ This request must be approved ‘-by the Treasury Board of B.C. On the board, amongst others, are Premier Bill Vander Zalm and MLA Jack Davis. If the board is made aware of the unmet needs of North Shore residents who have been denied service, it is more like- ly that these vehicles will be pro- vided. I urge you to write to B.C. Transit or the above mentioned politicians if it is important to you for the North Shore to get these ‘f additional vehicles.
