Whitewater Championships held over the weekend. In’ Saturday's downriver com- petition, Vancouver’s Stan Woods, 27, finished first overall in the men’s elite division. Paul Hardy, - 22, from Chilliwack was second. “In the women’s elite downriver, Richmond’s Joanne Draganiuk finished ahead of Jennie Goldberg from Washington State. The two 26- year-olds were the only com- petitors in the event. The two-man C-2 class, Alber- ta’s: 33-year-old O’Brien brothers, Darrell and Dale, beat fellow Albertans,, Mike Allan, 32, and Brock Wilson, 20. On Sunday, 20-year-old Peter Koci from Vancouver finished first in the Men’s Elite K-1 slalom event with a 200:4 second total. Vancouver's Dan Woods was second with 202:3, and 14-year-old Scott Shipley from Seattle was third, 10 seconds behind. In the Women's Elite slalom, White Rock's Mary-Anne Charles, 26, was first overall with a 231:8 second total. Draganiuk finished second, ahead of Susan’ Russell of West Vancouver. Bob Burton, 28, from Kamloops won the Men's open class slalom. In the C-1 class, Seattle’s 18- year-old Paul Shipley, was first with 223:07, followed by North Vancouver’s Dave Freeze at 239. The 25-year-old was 20 seconds faster than Alberta's Mike Allen The Men's C-2 slalom went to Dick and Paul Shipley from Seat- tle. Presented by the Whitewater Canoeing Association of B.C., the championships began Saturday and ran all day Sunday in river waters adjacent to the Capilano fish hatchery. In the downriver races, kayakers ran the length of the river; in the slalom competition, racers were required to negotiate 25 gates suspended from overhead cables. Penalty points in whitewater canoeing competitions are assessed for missed or touched gates. The racer with the fastest time, after penalty points, is the winner. Next big race for the kayakers will be Sunday on the Chilliwack’ River. The Canadian National Whitewater Championships will be held on the Cheakamus River from July 22 to 27,
