Al0 - Friday, April 6, 1984 - North Shore News Mounties to get that free lunch By NOEL WRIGHT THERE IS A FREE LUNCH after all -- and North Vancouver Mounties are going to be the first to enjoy it next month. Alderman Stella Jo Dean, chairman of the North Van City Potice Liasion Committee, has come up with a program called ‘*Take a Police Officer to Lunch” as a kickoff to National Police Week, May 14-19. The program will be in- augurated with a special luncheon Saturday, May 12, at 12 noon in the Seven Seas Restaurant. firmed the gloomy rumor. Why is he going? It’s true that he has been an MP for nearly 10 years (his 10th anniversary dinner is to be held in June). But he doesn’t look like a guy who's tired out. In a free society the police are the pillars of our freedoms,'’ says Dean, ‘‘but that pillar needs community support; every citizen shares the responsibility for the safety of our streets and property.’ ‘“*‘Many people,’’ she continued, ‘‘have never spoken to a police officer except when they've received a traffic ticket. Police in North Vancouver, under the direction of Supt. Roy Byrne, have been exemplary in serving the community in various ways.’’ Alderman Dean has also challenged all communities across Canada to. stage special events of their own to salute their police forces. She expects many North Shore community organiza- tions to have representatives at the Seven Seas luncheon. Tickets ($5.00 each) are ob- tainable at the North Van Chamber of Commerce, North Van City Hall and the Sign of the Fish Bookshop, 7 Lonsdale Avenue. I had spoken to him only a few days previously and there was no hint that he would be quitting. He was cussing the Liberals as heartily as ever and acting like a guy who was ready to storm the political parapets. But when I got him on the phone from ‘Oftawa he con- mand. It is not, or ever has been, ‘‘owned’’ by the NDP government in Winnipeg. As a matter of fact, if the order for the Flyer buses was made as Ms. Cook states in 1980, it was that well-known cham- pion of the right, Sterling Lyon, who lead a Conser- vative government at the ume. The NDP Government was not in power until November 1981. lt appears to me Sue Cook’s shp is showing more Collins? Yuk! Dear Editor: This is getting to be a bit much.
