Communists claim ‘obvious’

HOUSING

On the subject of housing,
NoVVA maintains ‘'that
decent, affordable housing is
a right”. NoVVA members
Richard Blackburn and Greg
Richmond, who ran un-
successfully in the North
Van City election last year,
appear to get backing. for
their North Shore Tenants’

Association in the policy
statement.

NoVVA states “that a
housing information office
should be established to
provide information for
tenants, tandlords and

homeowners. Richmond and
Blackburn

were un-
successful in getting
financial support from North
Shroe councils for the
tenants’ association they
currently head.

Blackburn is one

possibility among the names
of people who might stand
for the NoVVA nominations
to contest the North Van
District seats.

Favonte choice would
appear to be Betty Griffin,
who narrowly missed being
voted on the same council at
last year’s election, traihng
just a few votes behind mght-
winger Alderman John
Lakes.

Gniffin has previously run
as a candidate for the
Communist party of Canada
in provincial elections but is
best known locally as the
founder of the Committee
For Fair Assessments. Under
that banner she attempted to
pet the property tax
assessments of the Canadian

Occidental (Hooker
Chemicals) chlorine
manufactunng plant and
other North Van Distmet

industries increased

NoVVA president Don

Burbidge is realistic enough
to concede that some may
view the association as an
umbrella group for com-
munists to be elected to
council.

“I guess that is the obvious
mode of criticism,” he says.
“It doesn't have any grounds
to it. It is pretty obviously
not the case on the school
board.”

He is referring to North
Van School Board, made up
exclusively of NoVVA
members since the Rev. Roy

Dungey filled the only
vacant seat last year, by
acclamation.

Mayor Don Bell expressed
concerns during last year's
bitterly fought campaign for
District council seats that
the future might’ see
aldermen elected on straight
political lines of established,
parties.

Bell was perturbed when
he saw that the communist
endorsed Pacific Tmbune
newspaper backed Griffin,
Blackburn and Richmond as
well as existing District
alderman Ernie Crist, in last

year's municipal elections.

It is no secret he felt
duped that District had
nearly elected Griffin

without his even knowing
she was a Communist and the
mayor later insisted he felt
that members of other than

the “generally iecognised”
political parties should
declare their party af-

fihatons if they stand for
municipal election.

Bell maintains there is no
place for party politics at
municipal level as he says
aldermen should have
community interests, rather

than party interests,

foremost at heart.
