C6-Wednesday, September 3, 1980 - North Shore News Have you ever wondered about people who write to me for information about exotic locations? I do my best to get the whole truth from other readers — if I haven't been to the place myself. Often, I get a follow- up letter. A few months ago, I asked readers to lend a hand for an Ontario reader. who was heading for Algeria. Through a West Vancouver reader and an Ottawa reader, we managed to put together a fairly good picture of what this lady was . getting herself into. She went in spite of a phonecall to Ottawa wherein the gentleman “did everything he could to persuade me not to go. He couldn't believe that anyone would want to go and warned about food, drugs, theft...” She took my advice and got both T.A.B.T. shots and malaria pills and “felt much better having this protec- tion.” The experience was a “cultural shock”. Everything was dirty. People had to queue up for basic supplies such as detergent and toilet paper. For fresh vegetables, fruit and bread, the queues began at six a.m. There was only one telephone in a_ 14-storey apartment building. Cars were at a premium and continual repair problems a nightmare. There were never enough parts and no- one qualified to do repairs. The Protestant church has been “driven underground” Try ‘chirping’ instead If your prayers are in English and you wonder why they haven't been answered, George Madrigal, an itinerant preacher, says you're speaking the wrong Learn tow to further your edie ateoars Hew ¢ afeer Spend a tew hours One evening a ack: puters hospitality ina astly marketing of BAgineenng Choose tr and. she says that they are trying to do the same to the Catholics. It is all Moslem. The Koran was chanted over loudspeakers day and night. The officials at the airport were frightening. Forced to stand in the broiling sun on concrete, travellers waited until it was decided that they could come inside. “It was trayel- wise by Barba ra McCreadie such a strange scene wat- ching the people heading for the terminal with the guards beside them.” “Our friends warned us not to bring any money with uS aS we were to be their guests. My Belgian friend and I decided that I would take $150 in_ travellers’ cheques for emergencies. It was a very strange feeling to language. Madrigal, 55, says he chirps like a bird for his conversations with God, and insists it works. “It's God's universal language.” he said Wednesday in Birmingham. Ala. If this is a holiday, give me two weeks in the local pen instead! At least there, they EN- COURAGE you to practise your religion — whatever it may be. In both places, you need all the help you can get. DEAR BARBARA: Some time ago you gave a lot of information on travelling with children. When I read it, I knew for sure that you had done it all yourself. I'm going to be flying cross- Canada in September with our three (six, three and four months) while my husband drives the van with our furniture. It's the baby that I'm worried about as she is more than a “handful”. Any current advice? ANSWER: I'm sure glad it's you and not me! Just taking that troop across the street sounds lke a handful — much less a long flight. Bulkhead seats will give you more room BUT they aren't available in_ the “smoking section” on most aircraft. If you're a smoker, you'll go into nicotine fits while you cope with three kids. He says he even gets instructions directly from on high during the chirping chats. Things have even got to the point where he never drives anywhere. just takes planes. ve) See ce Ng resent cae feo HINOEOO,S BCIT Downtown Education Centre, 549 thowe %1 Phone 687-4666 or 434 5734 (Local 204) The aircraft are so crowded today (and the airlines complain they are losing money!) that you must be at the check-in counter early to get decent seats. On the other hand, by going late, you might get lucky and have the six and three seated four rows away with some kind soul who likes kids. As for practical advice, consult with your doctor about mild tranquillizers for the kids, especially if your flight leaves in the af- ternoon. Don't leave home until you know that your husband has arrived, has all beds sorted-out and made. Be sure that he gets an adequate sleep the night’ before because HE is going to have full charge when you arrive. If the kids are picky eaters, call the airline and order special meals. Canada’s airlines are very nice about this! Take everything you'll need for the baby, including paper diapers and formula. I found that putting measured amounts of sterile water in bottles and adding _pre- measured amounts of dry formula as you need it worked well. The kids will probably bounce back like puppies — while you'll be fagged out for a couple of days. Have your husband line up a baby-sitter in the new neighborhood and don't hesitate to call. If you're a_ wreck, there's nothing worse than having to Passport ph while you wait.
