Page 6, February 4, 1979 - Sunday News NORTH SHORE HOLLYWOOD: There were lots’ of interesting things to watch Thursday and Friday ‘in Horseshoe Bay, when the Paramount Pictures. team ~ moved in to shoot sequences \ for “Letters, from Frank” - . scheduled for release this spring on CBS-TV’s Monday Night At The Movies. Location manager Bob Gray of North Vancouver has a / special thank you for Mr. & Mrs.- Peter Kaffka, who ‘moved out of their house at 6496 Bay Street to help things along. The.entire film, incidentally, is being shot on location in the Lower ‘Mainland, according to Bob -. the two other locations being Fort Langley and Vancouver. “Letters from Frank” directed by Ed Parone, stars Art Carey, Maureeen Stapleton d- (does this date you?) Lew Ayres. Watch for it - and more of thesame as the movie moguls from the south discover Beautiful B.C. eee A North Shore boy who has made his mark on Vancouver Island is being widely tipped to succeed Gordon Gibson as leader of | . the B.C. Liberals. Jev Tothill a North Van high school graduate, is presently ‘an educational TV co-ordinator at Duncan, where he has built’ one. of the strongest Liberal’: ‘Constituency associations in the province. Gibson, whom he served as an adviser on tourism, was reportedly impressed with his party work and, by the same token, Tothill also enjoys some pretty solid support among the local Grit hierarchy. The crown may be his for the asking at the forthcoming leadership convention. His. only ' challenger to date is ap- parently a 51- year- old Aldergrove contractor named Hugh Chesley, whose claims to political fame are slightly dated - he was campaign manager for C.D. Howe (C.D. Who? to most of the under-forties) in the 1949 federal election and a one- time president of the North Ontario Young Liberals Association. Tothill also has his eye on Gordon Gibson’s vacant Capilano seat -in_ the Legislature. If named party leader, he might be a natural candidate for the Capilano constituency association to choose - Tothill’s present stumping ground at Duncan being an NDP hotbed. But whether he could command Gibson's former support here on polling de, is something that only the electorate knows about. Just before leaving the local election scene we also have the lively rumor that Tom Reld, former mayor of North Vancouver City, is toying with the idea of running for one of the two vacant North Van provincial seats. Either as a Socred or a Conservative. I've always said we're going to hear more of Tom - the only question apparently being what political colours he'll be dressed in next time round. fer \. eect 7 { If you. happen to have a $200,000 lying around and don’t know what to do with it, Lions Gate Hospital Administrator thwick would love to hear from you. That’s around the amount he still needs to complete the “badly needed extension. of the Children’s Wing at LGH. The final cost will be bet- . ween $250,000 and $300,000, ..toward which Borthwick has so far collected $60,000. He doesn’t want to go to the Provincial government for the balance, a step which could mean spending the next several years fighting the GVRD and every other - ‘hospital in the-province for the relatively small amount needed. That $200,000 works ‘out at just over a modest $4 for every household in North and West Vancouver. Wouldn't it be nice if even one half of those households sent him a small cheque (say for about eight bucks, tax deductible) - just to show we're looking after our own when _ there’s a real community need, without waiting on Victoria's bureaucrats? The address, by the way, is: Children’s Wing Fund, Lions Gate Hospital, 230 East 13th Street, North Vancouver. Congratulations to retiring Cy Davis, Len Crabb, Howard Holley, Percy Blackford and Gilbert Simpson - and to still-in- harness Walter Pazdzierski: all of them to be honored this Tuesday at North Vancouver District's senior staff banquet at the Canyon Gardens for long service to the mumicipality ranging from 18 to 32 years. West Vancouver Mayor Derrick Humphreys has strong views about garbage . If people would get a littl more cnthusiastic about recycling (among other things by patronizing the SPEC depot at 22nd and Marine), His Worship maintains that the average household would need only a couple of grocery bags a week for its non-recyclable leftovers. —— Mayor Humphreys also believes you can tell what people are like by their ' garbage. He recently put this interesting thought by phone to a major West Van supermarket whose garbage area was somewhat less than tidy. They cleaned up their act without waiting to hear the second half of the mayor's thought. WRIGHT OR WRONG: Behind every successful man stands a surprised mother-in- law. the. The West SPCA is no Iongér{in the dog-catching business. Members of the West Van SPCA Branch were told at last week’s annual general meeting that their com- mittee had decided, after much discussion and deliberation, not to. renew the pound contract with West Vancouver municipality. President Marie Moscovitch, who was re- elected for a seventh term, said the society should never have become involved in pound work because un- fortunately the public could not separate the two func- © tions (pound and shelter) and ‘it was always the SPCA that — suffered for matters beyond its control.
