Consultant will find car’s best price Jan-Christian Sorensen Contributing Writer BILL Jecks may be your best link to buy- ing a new car. The self protessed North Vancouver car enthusiast recently allied himself with American) Auto Consulting (AAC) out of Kansas City to form the corporation's only Canadian consulting branch — Pacific Auto Source. Jecks works with prospee- tive auto buyers, catering especially to those with little knowledge of cars, to narrow down and locate the best deal on their vehicle of choice. Buyers can select a number of vehicles with specific options and Jecks will provide an information sheet detailing the price, war- ranty and availability of the models. Once a specific vehicle has been selected, Jecks will work with a number of dealers that bid through AAC to secure the best price possible — sometimes even below dealer invoice. He recently helped a customer locate and purchase a Mustang GT that had a list price of $32,000. The best deal the buyer could secure was a deduction of $1,500. Jecks, however, tested the waters at several dealerships and managed to get the model for only $28,461. For his service, Jecks charges 2% of the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). On the Mustang deal, that worked out to roughly $700. fecks claims his service takes the hassle — and pres- sure — out of the sometimes- harrowing, experience of hag- gling with dealerships to obtain the lowest price. “Before | got into this, virtually everybody told me about a negative experience they had a car dealership,” said Jecks. “They just don’t like the process. This way, there’s no pressure. [’'m not selling you a car, I'm buying you a car. You make the choice and [ get the best deal.” He said that more than a few people have been wary of his more user-friendly approach to buying a car. “Dve had some problems with people believing it could be this easy,” said Jecks, who works our of his home. A former detailer, Jecks has been doling out advice on car and truck purchases for years but only recently decided to charge for his services. “Cars are my life J know them in and out, so this is just a natural thing for me,” said Jecks, who has owned more than 40 cars since he caught the automotive bug See Chosen pase 29 Friday, July 14, 2000 - North Shore News - 27 openred ot PR SE BSN ede EP TON TO SEEIENE erlence NEWS photo Mike Wakefield NORTH Vancouver automotive consultant Bill Jecks is aiming to take the hassle out of buying a car with his newly-formed company, Pacific Auto Source. & > NORTH SHORE PARTS | P Auto Parts Plus “TALK TO YOUR AUTO PARTS PROFESSIONALS” : Come In and Join Ou 'P-Pre Computer resets puzzle Dear Mr Fix-it, Your column, “Car's con puter needs to reniember,” Qune 16) was really helpful, but T have one question. Is the same procedure not only valid for Ford cars but also for Chevrolets and GAICs? My manual (Chilton’s) does not cover a procedure to set the correct idle speed after replacing the ignition module. The tech- nician does nor scent to know. Phave an °89 4.3-litre engine and sometimes, especially when the engine is hot, the revs drop and the engine stalls. Werner Stephan. West Vancouver wdstephan@home.com Dear Mr. Stephan, The idle control settings are different for each manufactur- er. Your vehicle has no physical adjustment for the LAC (idle air control) valve assembly. The IAC valve is reset on your vehicle by turning the key ON for 10 seconds and then OFF. The com- puter (ECM) then resets the pintle to the correct position. If the engine continues to stall, further diagnosing would need to be performed by a qualified technician.
