Good Neighbor Award BEING DIAGNOSED with multiple sclerosis 12 years ago was a setback which Ron Briggs of Ranger Avenue in North Vancouver has turned around to benefit. others. This year’s recipient of the Good Neighbor Award, Briggs serves as board member for the MS Society, organizes self-help groups and counsels newly- diagnosed patients. In addition, Briggs has also par- ticipated in two UBC research pro- jects concerning possible cures for multiple sclerosis. One involving interferon was deemed ‘‘in- conclusive’? after a couple of years. “It was time consuming and | had to put a necdle in my arm for six months,”’ recalls Briggs. Now he is involved in a two-year study into the use of a drug that lowers the number of white cells which attack antibodies. “*] learned what it was like to have a full head of hair, go bald and then have curly hair,’’ laughs Briggs, who was happy to see the curls go. Brige’s commitment to his community doesn't stop there. In addition to working a weekly mid- night shift for the Vancouver Crisis Centre, Briggs interviews volunteers for the Vancouver Vol- unteer Centre and serves as a director for the False Creek: Resi- dence for the Physically Handi- Briggs, who played in the Shrine Club oriental band for 8% years, - recently helped organize the new Lake City Shrine Club and is now the group’s past charter president. Whatever time he has to spare Briggs spends with his wife and family of three children and two grandchildren. On extended leave from his job at Lloyds Bank, Briggs believes that his busy lifestyle. and com- mitment to others has helped him cope with multiple sclerosis. “*You’ve got to keep busy and keep in the right frame of mind. There’s nothing you can do about having M.S. There’s no cause or cure. Sitting around 24 hours a day thinking about it isn’t going to do yourself or anybody any good.”’ The Good Neighbor Award was established in 1984 by the Associa- tion of Neighbourhood Houses to honor members of the community who have consistently contributed time and energy to the improve- ment of family and neighborhood life in Greater Vancouver. The association is a com- munity-based social services organization which has been 135 Pemberton Avenue, North Van. 984-3558 operating exclusively in British Columbia since 1894. Through its eight neighborhood houses, it pro- vides programs for children, youth, seniors and families.
