Opening today at Fifth Ave. Cinemas. lick flic Julie Crawford Film Reviews G kx Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Directed by Guy Ritchie Opens today at Fifth Ave. Cinemas. FIRST-TIME director Guy Ritchie must be getting tired of people comparing his film to Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. | Sure, there are resem- blances aplenty between Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Pulp Fiction: both films take gunplay to a new level, but Ritchic manages to keep i it effective while keeping it offscreen. Both are chock full of witty dialogue, but if you can get past the Cockney accents, Ritchie’s is far fun- nier because it hits closer to home. They are just four ordi- nary guys, after all. Sure, Soap (Dexter Fletcher) is the only one with a real job. Tom and Bacon (Jason Flemyng and Jason Statham) manage to skirt the law most of the time, and Eddy (Nick Moran) is the undisputed king of cards in his end of ton. The real trouble begins when Eddy walks away from a rigged-up card game owing MALE ENTERTAINMENT « DOORS OPEN 8 PM BOOK YOUR STAGETTES Sorry Guys - You'll have to wait until 11 pm, but enjoy the lounge area until then! Eddy and his mates have a week to scrape up the money before fingers, toes — and God knows what else — start coming off. It’s either that or Eddy’s dad (Sting as J.D.) will be forced to hand over his bar to Harry, and Eddy would rather lose a finger or two than take up that offer. Those appendages will be broken courtesy of the menacing Big Chris. (U.K. soccer star Vinnic Jones. Casting soccer players secins to be a new trend in filmmaking: recently seen was Eric Cantona, who had a supporting role in Elizabech) The foursome? s only hepe is also their undoing: the boys eavesdrop on some neighbouring thugs planning to rob a marijuana factory, and figure that with a few guns and a little luck, they can intercept the cash and pay off their debt to Harry. From there the plot gets convoluted and reads like a Three's Company rerun. Eddy and his mates don’t realize that the cheap guns they buy are actually antiques that Harry is trying to recover at all costs. The plan to hijack the drug money entangles them with three hard-nosed gangs all trying co figure out who to shoot, leading to a blind and somewhat comical bloodbath. Less cohesive writing could have been overshad- owed by Guy Ritchic’s nervy camera effects — his back- ground in vidcos and com- mercials shows in his use of slow motion, freeze frame and variable speed shots. Lock, Stock and Tivo Smoking Barrels is nothing if not slick. Not salesman-of- the-year slick but ice-cold martini, no-standing-in-line slick. Opens today at Park & Tilford Cineplex. In theatres now is Forces of Nature, starring Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock. Affleck is Ben Holmes, a buttoned- down copywriter trying to get from New York City to Savannah for his wedding. Sarah (Sandra Bullock) is his polar opposite, and after the two are thrown together ina plane crash, Sarah spends the rest of the time trying to get Ben to loosen up. She's got plenty of time. The two encounter one disas- ter after another by plane, train and automobile (yes, there are definite similarities) en route to Savannah. As Ben is increasingly drawn to the free-spirited Sarah, he won- ders if his fiancee ( Newsradio’s Maura Tierney) is really the woman for him. The moral message here is a bit ambiguous: Ben seems to have more than pre-wed- ding jitters on his min. See Star page 19 $259 360 tats $9,180 caps S8S-5271 1520 Lonsdale @15 15th ¢ General Store!
