AS a little boy growing
up in Austria, Fritz
Duernberger had litte
time for the Porsches
and BMWs that one
would suspect would be
near and dear his
youthful heart.

Rather, the machines that
would ger young Fritz’s blood
racing were the elegant,
sophisticated designs coming
out of Italy. :

“The German cars, I find
them plump; Italian cars are all
finesse,” the longtime Lynn
Valley resident says, a hint of
lalian inflection in his voice.
“They ({Ftalian cars) don’t
work worth a damn bur they

true Alpha-phile.

‘club member will be one of
many similar afficiando’s who
will be displaying their passion
for all - things Italian at
Waterfront Park on Father's
Day (this Sunday). The ninth
annual Frafian Car, Motorcycle and Bicycle
show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
and will feature fine examples of Italian
workmanship. ;

. “I’ve been dreaming about Alphas
since [ was 14-years-old, and when T was
28.1 finalty got one,” Duernberger recalls
of the Alpha Romco Sprint he bought 25
years ago. He joined the B.C. Aipha Club
about the same time.

He describes the mechanical workings
of the once-mighty marquess as perform-
ing “like a classic Italian Opera”, and says
over the years he’s owned a dozen or so
Alphas, many of them of the race car vari-
ety.

“I had at one time abour seven, but
when Westwood (race track) closed I sold
most of them aff,” he said.

and bicycles ail set for show this Sunday, Father’s Day, at Waterfront Park. The
ninth annual Italian Car, Motorcycle and Bicycle show runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the
North Vancouver park (located just west of Lonsdale Quay}. This year’s feature
display marquee is De Tomaso Pantera.

with an electric window?,” he scoffs. “Ir’s

a tow truck.”
