This seven-member public ‘committee have heen working hard to identify environmentally sensitive areas throughout the City. Many of . eee << ¢ eee them have specific environmental expertise and have spent hours walking through our ravines and parks. Vr naTny-: va . »> PUBLIC BRAINSTORM The Committee took their draft material . to an open house where some excellent ideas were hatched. Getting closer to and restoring cur waterways was one important theme that emerged from the session. One > GREEN ZONES | » Working along with local consultants, Kerr Wood Leidal Associates, the committee has now “mapped out” our city.areas according to * their environmental sensitivity. “High - Our forested river corridors or areas where there is continuous. forest cover. ‘Moderate - Areas that geographically draw i into watercourses. . Moderately Low - Areas that drain inte watercourses but have no ‘vegetative features. a Least - Streets and catch basins that drain into Burrard Inlet. + ms ya INVOLVE THE KIDS! Another idea “borrowed” from our West Vancouver neighbours was “painting yellow fish near storm drains to remind us not to dump nything toxic in the sewers. This project could invelve local scouts, girl guides and stream clubs for an economical “green” solution. suggestion included “daylighting”, or restoring Moodyville creek, which used to run along Grand Boulevard. Another popular idea was creating more waterfront lands and public access to our North Shore, as it is re-developed. A sea walk similar to West Vancouver's oceanfront walkway was also discussed. » SUGGESTIONS WELCOME The City of North Vancouver is committed to maintaining and enhancing our green corridors into the next century and beyond.
