The restaurant is new, but its.
service was swift, and, if anything,
overly attentive on our Friday
night visit. :

Its food, however, was largely
disappointing.

For example, the chicken stock
base for the tortellini soup tasted
suspiciously like broth made from
store-bought bouilion cubes.

And the antipasto -- a dish that
usually reflects an Italian kitchen’s
personality — was a dull spread of
salami and cheese slices, tomato

_ wedges, julienne carrots,

marinated mushrooms and sliced
celery beneath an odd aiola sauce.

No grilled eggplant, no spicy
meats, no Italian cheeses, no sur-
prises.

My main-course veal loin and
beef tenderloin combination was
better.

Both meats were simply grilled
and topped with sliced fried
mushrooms.

The prawns were presented in a
red pepper and caper sauce.

Our entree vegetable accom-
animent was uninspired: broiled
roccoli, sliced carrots, half-baked

tomato and three pieces of cot-
tage-fried potatoes.

Tortes and cakes were available
for dessert.

Valentino’s is the new Italian kid
on the block, but it needs some
flourish and finish in its kitchen if it;
hopes to age gracefully and avoid
the fate of its many predecessors:
