NORTH SHORE seniors are living in fear of criminals and believe they are the number one crime target, Vanccuver RCMP constable said this week. But Const. Mare Boland, who held a two-hour meeting with seniors from across the North Shore at the North Shore Neigh- bourhood House on Monday, sitid focal seniors have nothing to fear. Boland spoke to a group of about 70 seniors on personal and apartment security. “The fear level is high among the seniors, but our community is a safe community,’’ said Boland, a member of the North Vancouver RCMP detachment’s community policing section. He added that he still has fe- male seniors expressing concerns to him about convicted rapist and kidnapper David Alexander Snow. Snow had assaulted three women on the North Shore during a week-long reign of terror. “Sexual assaults of seniors is next to nil in our community. I tried to teach them how not to be a target. The seniors have a real fear of being victimized,”’ said Boland. He added police and seniors have to work together to solve some of the problems seniors are facing. Boland said the fear of crime is greater among North Shore seniors than any other group.. By Surj Rattan News Reporter THE FOLLOWING are some safety tips for seniors supplied by the RCMP: At home: ® Doors should be equipped with a door viewer and deadbolt lock. @ All windows should be secured and window shades or drapes should be drawn after dark, @ All entrances and garages should be well-lit. ® Seniors should never remain alone in an apartment faundry room, mailroom or parking garage. @ Avoid feminine identification. Do not. put your first name on your muilbox or in the telephone book. @® Unknowr persons should not be admitted to your premises unless proper credentials are presented. © Should a stranger request use of your telephone, do not allow the person to enter.
