that any other country
would permit fat-cat teach-
ers to go on strike who earn
up to $60,000 a year, plus
big pensions and every fr-
inge benefit known to man.

Only a colicction of cowards in
government could have let it go
on for so Jong, And nota single
media outlet or politician has
proposed that teachers’ strikes
should be struck out — perma-
nently — and that they should be
told to get on with the job or go
berry-picking.

That’s not our way. We are too
nice.

In the U.S,, a Ronald Reagan
could fire striking air traffic con-
trollers and risk being damned if
crashes occurred (they didn’t). But
here in Kiss-Me Land all we do is
bleat.

The B.C. Teachers Federation
has been led by radicals for the
past 25 years, but there’s no point
in blaming them for the present
state of anarchy.

It’s our fault for letting them
get away with it. Our motto is
“*We Surrender.”

The failing is national, not just
local.

We saw it in Oka with the In-
dians. That fiasco was allowed to
go on for months even though a
policeman had been killed and
armed gangsters were on the
loose. The whole thing could and
should have been stopped in 24
hours.

We sec it caily in the courts.

A study done by the Canadian
Centre for Justice shows that in
1988, in 47% of all homicide cases
the original charge was first-

degree murder. But only 10% of
those were convicted on that
charge. In nearly all, murder
became mere manslaughter.

The whole system is off its
rocker, As everyone knows, there
is no effective deterrent in the case
of juvenile crime.

Instead of being made to suffer
a bit, the kids are sent into group
homes where they can sneak out
in the iniddle of the night, steal
cars and be mollycoddled by staff
with dreadlock haircuts.

We see it in that eco-terrorist
aul Watson, who should have
been behind bars years ago and
would be now if the Norwegians
could get hold of him.

Watson can boast that his mad
mob has spiked thousands of trees
in the Clayoquot and that he
plans to do more, Nothing is done
about him. His sneering face ap-
pears on news programs,

We see it in the changes in our
so-called cducation system, where
standards fall and the main pur-
pose is to send the chiidren home
“feeling good.”

It is better to have them feeling
good, we are told, than to expose
them to the dreadful consequences
of competition and meaningful
exams,

Idiots and other unfortunates
are put into classes with normal
kids where they vomit, drool and
are sometimes violent. Everyone is
equal, you see, even if they are
not,

We sec it in the collapse of the
immigration system, Result? Ot-
tawa decides in only 14% of cases
who should get into this country.
The rest come in as of right — a
ceaseless stream of phoncy ref-
ugees and relatives.

We see it in the welfare scan-
dals. We are so dippy that
cheaters can register at a dozen
places and live happily ever after,
Hundred million dollar overruns
are better than fingerprinting
people.

Newcomers have no difficulty in
getting buckets of free money.
