Shore pioneer founding member of outdoor society NORTH VANCOUVER last one of its pioneer resi- dents recently with the pass- ing of Clarence ‘‘Clary” Egginton, 94, who came to North Vancouver from Leeds, England in 1909 with his mother and brother George to join his father, who was one of B.C. Eiec- tric’s first employees. By Penny McDonald Contributing Writer A founding member of the North Shore Fish, Game and Forest Protective Society, estab- lished in 1918, Egginton was an ardent hiker, hunter and angler and enjoyed fishing the productive North Shore streams long before the Lions Gate Bridge was built and the Cleveland Dam was con- structed, Egginton’s favorite fishing partner, George, served a term as the club’s treasurer and was one of the first loggers in the Capilano the early ‘20s Egginton, George and some friends built a small log cabin on the banks of the Capilano River not far from where the Upper Levels Highway bridge is today. Often he would stay at the cabin overnight and get up early in the morning and land a couple of steelhead in the Keith Road Pool before catching the ferry to Vancouver, where he worked at Hudson Optical as an optician. His interest in history led him to donate old photographs and ar- tifacts to the North Vancouver Museum. In the spring and summer his colorful flower boxes were the en- vy of his neighborhood. Roses were also his specialty. Egginton died suddenly in Lions Gate Hospital during a brief bout with pneumonia in October. He was interred at the Capilano View - 3 Cemetery overlooking his beloved Capilano River, He will be sadly missed by his surviving sister, nieces and neph- ews and great-nieces and great- nephews and many friends, young and old.
