North Shore News Standards mean gas fireplaces safer FURTHER TO a warning issued on May 7, Consumer and Cor- porate Affairs Canada has been informed by the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) that certifica- tion standards have been revised for direct-vent natural gas and propane fireplaces. The revised Standards are designed to eliminate the danger associated with any cx- plosion which may occur when the appliance is reignited while an ac- cumulation of gas remains inside the unit. Provincial inspection authorities have participated in the develop- ment of the revised standards. Any necessary safety modifications will be made before certification is reinstated and manufacturers resume sales. Many direct-vent fireplace models have now been recertified to the revised CGA re- quirements and have returned to the market. Remaining units are currently undergoing certification tests, Where safety modifications are necessary for existing units, manu- facturers are contacting consumers to make arrangements. Owners of direct-vent gas fireplaces who have not yet been contacted should not use their units and are encouraged to contact the manufacturer or dealer. Direct-vent gas fireplaces have sealed giass front panels that can- not be opened and exhaust directly through the wall behind the unit. $400,000 Designer Plant Liquidation 60 80% OFF Fabric trees, plants, hang- ing baskets, clay and ceramic pots, dramatic arrangements, artificial plants, cherry trees, floral ~ and landscape supplies, : etc., etc. 1175 West 15th Street (at Pemberton) North Vancouver Daily 10-5:30 except Sunday y( y Auctions 984-3388 ~ : -— " : NEWS photo Cindy Goodman BRUCE BRADSHAW puts up baskets of spring flowers on the street lamps lining Lonsdale in North Van- After all the yeors he took you along, when. it would have been more convenient not to.
