With the retirement of the Firenza, Oldsmobile'’s entry-level car line from 1982 through 1988, the Cutiass Calais becomes this Oldsmobile’s most compact offer- ing. Available in two-door coupe and four-door sedan bodystyles, the Cutlass Calais is a modern front-wheel drive design (introduc- ed in 1985) powered by a number of four- and six-cylinder engines. Its wheelbase is 103.4 inches. Three model levels are carried over from last year — Cutlass Calais S, Cutlass Calais SL, and Cutlass Calais International Series. All Cutlass Calais models benefit from restyling that brings a more aggressive front-end treat- ment, a new rear fascia, all-red taillamps, and side body appear-- ance. Interior changes include an increased use of black (rather than chrome) trim, three-point rear seat sified auto belts for outboard passengers, an auto ‘express’? down feature that lowers the optional driver side power window with one touch. An engine block heater is standard on ail Calais models. The lineup of engines is improv- ed in major ways for the 1989 model year, adding new spark to the performance of the Cutlass Calais. The base 2.5-litre four cyl- inder is now rated at 110 net horsepower (up from 98 horse- power). The record-seeking Quad 4 engine, now optional in all Cutlass Calais models except the Interna- tional Series where it is standard equipment, carries on with 150 net horsepower at 5,200 rpm. A new Series 3,300 V-6 is cffered as an option in Cutlass Calais S and SL editions; that potent prime mover is rated at 160 net horsepower and 185 Ib.-ft. of torque. Late in the model year, another engine selection will be added. A special high-output version of the Quad 4 rated at 180 net horse- power (at 6,200 rpm) and 160 Ib.- ft. of terque (at 5,200 rpm) will See Options Page 20 submitted THE NEW Cutlass Calais models have a more aggressive front-end treatment, a new rear fascia, all-red taillamps and side body appearance. _
