AMY MOLLISON flew to Australia from the U.K. Doug Collins ® get this straight ® ina Tiger Moth when airplanes were not much bigger than moths, Amelia Earhart flew in the Pacific, and our Sharon Wood, who lectured in North Van last night, climbed Everest. Which proves, | think, that women can do almost anything men can do. Such women are not afraid of mice. So let's pay tribute to them. And not only in the world of physical achievement. If Maggie Thatcher were a Canadian, for in- stance, she would get my vote ‘before any man I can think of. There are some girls in B.C. who are not afraid of mice, either. achieve the fame of Tensing Norkay, the Sherpa who made the first ascent with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. First is first and last is last. You can bet, too, that he didn’t carry any of Sharon's gear. On Everest, it’s all a guy can do to carry his own. But he made a mistake in going up that hill with a female. She was the first of her sex to get to the top, you see, and so it is she, not he, who will be remembered. Glory is always particular. Poor Congdon won’t even chivalry. When | say mountaineering I'm talking about the real stuff, of course, not just going walkabout on mountains. I’m talking about going up sheer rock faces on ropes, and freezing. You wouldn't get me to do that sort of thing even to get rid of Brian Baloney. It's just not my idea of fun. Not only that, but one of the many phobias that afflict me is acrophobia. Airplanes 1 don’t mind. 1! could imagine myself jumping out of an airplane attach- ed to a parachute. But standing with my feet on terra firma and looking down a six-foot drop gives me the collywobbles. Once, as a kid, before I ever heard of phobias, I edged myself around a wall that had been built Fireworks regulations WITH TRADITIONAL Halloween shenanigans lurking around the corner, the North Shore fire departments want the public to know where they stand on fireworks regula- tions. That’s what you had to do to join the local gang. The thing was 800 feet deep and if a scone was dropped to the bot- tom the sound of the splash seem- ed to take five minutes to come up. And there were ghosts down there. For some years after that I used to dream of falling down a coal mine. But up or down makes no differerce. The hands still get clammy. Sharon has no such concerns, obviousty. All that matters is get- ting to the top. In a letter to her friend, Mrs. Ruth Gunn of West Vancouver, she described the final ascent in these words: “The morning dawned with stormy skies — our constant adversary. Soon the climb- ing consumed our pessimism and a complete and intense focus prevailed. “Thousands of feet below, the entire expedition anxiously followed our progress through binoculars. Encouragement and bantering cracki.d over the radio buried deep inside my jacket. ‘As dusk approached, the cliff sections now below us, we con- tinued on without hesitation, knowing darkness would meet us well before our return to safety.
