[ By NANCY WEATHERLEY | What is happening is ‘‘A Little Berner in the Night,’’ a CJOR radio show in an unusual setting. While the show is in pro- gress there is a steady stream of curious passers-by, some hotel guests, and some celebrities, local and otherwise. Tonight, we are told, Show Host David Berner ran into Ray Milland in the lobby. wosesbeness OOOH OHE4+OD “*Shall I push myself on this great American actor I asked myself? and thought ‘What the Hell’.”” Apparently he was rebuffed the minute he mentioned he had a radio show. But it makes a good tafe, and fills a minute or so of the three hours of live air time. Berner has been at this talk show, cutsy easy listening night spot only for about six months. . POOH Hee His resume, three pages that read like an entertain- ment guide to TV, stage, and radio in Western Canada, outlines a colorful and ver- satile career. Berner has been a comic, actor, playwright, imterviewer, director, pro- ducer, teacher, and lecturer, and there are elements of all these roles in the character who questions, jokes, mimics, and performs behind the microphone in the hotel Fee ooeo' ‘Sean abaae Mm reer a mae Mm Tg gpa IT TT Had Bil - ‘Wednesday, March 14, 1984 - North Shore News 4 lobby. Berner rejected CJOR’s ‘space age operation’ in favor of the hotel lobby for several reasons. ‘‘I’m a performer, | like being out in the public’”’ and he finds guests are more likely to make a trip for the 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. show to a hotel lobby than they would be to a radio station. Plus he gets a bird’s eye view of any celebrities staying at the hotel where they are more approachable, and some presumably, more anx- ious to be on CJOR than Ray Milland. Because of the nature of the show there is a certain sense of pressure, even though it is generally booked up about three weeks in ad- vance. “‘If a celeb suddenly appears you make room for them.’’ Other than that + + 4404 H He +H HHH HTHOHOHS guests are culled from Berner’s own contacts and ‘‘a couple of kids I have running around town hunting up peo- ple for me.’”’ The sound of laughter is a familiar one from Berner’s show. ‘‘I really like comics and I like people who are funny.”’’ Even the most serious guest is interrupted by Berner’s one liners and a series of taped sound effects he keeps ready for all occasions. “Sq many .neonle have been so much fun, and generally they’re a complete surprise,”” mixed bag of guests. And for David Berner the bottom line is always to have fun. Which makes it easy if you’re trying to find him in the Four Seasons’ lobby some night. all North Shore businesses Are you receiving a copy of the Friday News?
