Al0 - Wednesday, March 23, 1983 - North Shore News inquiring reporter ‘ by Ellsworth Dickson During the past year there has been much speculation regarding a provincial election. Presently, we seem to be going into another stage of pre-election fever. With this in mind the Ing. For one thing, the men who held up the pizza driver were armed with a rifle. And when police went to check out a supect the lights of the house were turned off and sounds from the home in- dicated the occupants may be barricading themselves in for a siege. “We knew a rifle was in- volved,’ an RCMP detective spokesman told the News. “So, rather than force entry and risk an armed confronta- tion we elected to contain the residents with the emergency response team and call in a negotiator to talk them out of the house.” The spokesman = said follow-up investigation in- dicated the only reason the drama occurred in the first place was because a relative or friend of one of the suspects appeared to have been monitoring police radio messages. The activities in the house are believed to have been prompted by the Suspect receiving a phone call warning him that the police were on their way. The robbery had occurred in the usual way, by a pizza being ordered for delivery to an address where the rob- bers were waiting for a driver. When the driver arrived to the address on Tobruk Avenue, a rifle was shoved in his ribs and two men stole his wallet, some other cash, the pizza and his car keys and then ran off. The pizza driver dashed to a nearby intersection where he had noticed a police car while on his way to make the delivery. The police officer radioed back to headquarters with details of the holdup and it is believed the police messages were being monitored. “This in turn generated the unusual activity within the house,” the detective spokesman told the News. Edward Douglas Lakes, aged 19, of 889 Tobruk, and Michael Graham Hopper, also 19, of 314-555 West 28th Street in North Vancouver appeared in provincial court in North Van on robbery charges and were released on their own recognizance of $1,000.
