Neat Things, a com-
bination store and studio on
Marine Drive in West
Vancouver, is just that - a
place to go full of neat and
interesting things all hand-
made and designed by
vanous local artists.

It all began three years
ago when owner Margery
Powell decided to start a
studio with creanve clothing
in mind - clothing as a
unique individual art form.
As people became interested
in dropping by and buying
various pieces, the studio
soon became a small shop
with a studio in back. Other
artists working on the same
concept — one of a kind
clothing — became involved
and last Fall the idea came
up to hold a fashion show at
the Robson Square Theatre.
It was an overwhelming
success and since then seven
artists have been working
together to keep Neat Things
full of neat things.

Although some of the
designers have their own
studios, much of the work
for their distinctive artwear
is done might in the small
studio adjacent to the shop.

If you drop by at 1765
Marine Drive you're likely to
see one of the artists either
hand dying, weaving,
knitting, sewing, doing some
fabric printing or painting or
suk screening.

Everything from lovely
soft muted tone dresses in
Ikat weaving with a definite
Japanese influence to hand
painted silk can be found in
Neat Things. A selection of
hand woven sashes and
handmade jewellery are on
display with an assortment of
unique designs in knitwear.
Prices range from $100.00 to
$300.00. Neat Things reflects
Margery Powell's own
personal statement about
clothing as an art form,
“Clothing should be fun,
make you feel good, lift your
spints! A combination of the
caring of the person who
puts all the threads and
fabrics together for just the
right person to wear, and so
to becoem a moving piece of
art — that is what I strive
for.”

You can get a chance to
see some of these “neat
things” at a Garden Party at
where else, but Neat Things
in West Vancouver. It's on
Sunday, May | between 1
and 4 pm.

Stylist wins

WINNER of the Vancouver
semi-final of the Glemby
International Worldwide
Hairstyling Competition,
beld Sunday at the Bayshore
Inn, Vancouver, was Carla
Hollman, manager of the
Simpson-Sears beauty salon
in Red Deer, Alberta.

Hollman won out over
mine contestants from B.C.
and four others’ from
Alberta.

She will now compete
against 21 other semi.
finalists from the US...
Canada, the U.K . Austraha
and South Afneca for the
$5,000 grand pnze as one of
the world’s top hair stylists in
the final of the contest July
