chosen for national team CLAIRE BACKHOUSE of North Vancouver is one of three B.C. women named to the eight-member Com- monwealth Games _ bad- minton team, the Canadian Badminton Association announced last week. Backhouse, Jane Youngberg of White Rock and Sandra Skillings of Vancouver are all members of the Vancouver Racquets Club. The team will represent Canada at the Com- monwealth Games slated for September in Brisbane, Australia. Top-level competition is a way of life for the three. Backhouse, a member of Canada’s Uber Cup team, was a triple crown finalist at the Canadian™ National Badminton Championships held in May. Currently the number two- ranked player in the country in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, Backhouse has also had the distinction of being ranked third in the world in doubles with Jane Youngberg. The Games, held every four years, feature top athletes from every Com- monwealth country com- peting over a_ three-week period for individual and team medals in their par- ticular sport. The Canadian badminton team won the silver medal in 1978 for the team event, and this year’s team expects to achicve even greater success in Brisbanc. (Ellsworth Dickson photo) Drillers win Robbie silver By NANCY CAMPBELL BAGK EAST they were called Squirts, but the Lynn Valley Drillers gave the lie to the name as they battled to a sterling finish in the Robbie International Soccer Tournament. The tournament was held at the end of June in Scar- bourough, Ontario, and featured teams of both sexes and all ages from 11! countries, including 21 states and seven provinces. The Drillers are an Under- 8 club in the Lynn Valley Soccer Association, reknowned for its select Falcon teams. Although in B.C. the age group is commonly known as Under- 8 in league play, in Ontario the youngsters are known as Squirts. (Older group names in- clude Atoms for Under-10s, Mosquitos for Under-12s, Peewees for Under-14s and Bantams for Under-16s.) The Drillers won five games straight in their 28- team division before losing a 10 decision to a Scar- borough club in the finals and finishing with the silver medal. A consistently performance strong from goalie Shane Ito gave the young team a 23-3 goals for/against record by the end of the tournament. team finished with 13-0, their defensive style of playing becoming all the more obvious when Lynn Valley outshot them 14-3 in the final. The Drillers were the only house team competing in their category — all other teams were selects. On their way to the top the boys defeated the favourite, St. Andrew of Ontario, 4-1.
