But due to government restraint, the efforts of about 25,000 volunteers will fill the vaccuum left when the federal government slashed its budget for celebrations by almost half. Yvon DesRochers, chairman of the birthday committee, told a news conference Thursday that more than 3,000 events are planned for Canada Day. “More than ever, this year the Canada Day celebration is based upon local events, organized by people in their own areas, in their own way and according to their own taste,” DesRochers said. He said events organized around the theme “Canada, It's You and Me” included a sardine-stuffing contest in St. Andrews, N.B.; a 10 and 30-kilometre marathon race in Nanisivik, Baffin Island: a world championship bed race in Flin Flon, Man.; and a gold panning contest m Dawson City, Yukon. But for the first ume, this year’s Canada Day television broadcast of the July 1 cele- brations will not focus on . Ottawa and a lavish, big- name show from Parhament Hill. The program will consist instead of half-hour segments, highlighting the 375th anniversary of Samuel Champlain founding Mount Royal in Montreal and the 75th anniversanes of Alberta and Manitoba, DesRochers said. The second segment will show festivities across the country while the third will be a vanety show from Upper Canada Village, a reconstructed 1800s village on the St. Lawrence River about SO miles south of Ottawa In Ottawa, folk and blues singers bands will en lertain the local crowds rather than a national tele- vision audience from the usual giant stage on Parhament Hul. There will also be a gigantic fireworks display from the Hill and chps will be shown in the 90-minute show, DesRochers said. Desrochers’ said the government reduced its budget for activities for the last week of June to $2 million from the 1979 budget of $3.8 milhon. But budget restraint never provided an excuse to dampen festivities during the pre-July | week, he said. “On the contrary, we used the cutback to prove that in no way the will of benevolent organizations and Canadians throughout the country was reduced to celebrate Canada’s bir- thday.” DesRochers said. He said there would be over 3,000 events and 25.000 volunteers participating this year, a substannal increase over last year Summer Mathematics Tutoring Get A Head Start On The 1980-81 School Year Prevent difficulties by reviewing dasa skilts and gaming o sound boss for the coming year We have BC professsonal teaching certificates severo! years classroom teaching expenence from elementary through University level and extensive tuforing ar ithe ts cak ulus experience in algebro and geometry & improve Attitude t& Devetop Better Study Habits th Supplement Semmer School t Grade 4 threugh University 738-6146 (cot vetere tone 24) SALE LOW COST PERSONALLOANS — || interest Kk Colculoted Monthly Minimum $3500 Maximum $50 000 Amount $5,030 41 48 MONTH (Example) Monthly payment $140.00 * “Kates subject to Change WM the Permanent Canada Perrvanent Test ¢ Cost of loan $1,689.59 CEPA ey Canada Percianeol Mortgage © ocporator 2154W.4ist Park Royal South 1604 Lonsdale Lansdowne Park 455 Granville 701 W.Georgia 2699 Granville Kerrisdale West Van North Van Unit 626-5300 684-0466 Pacific Centre at 11th 266-7101 920-5461 986-1311 #3 Rd , Richmond 689-0611 731-6554 273-0821
