And, if you're anything like the droves of other readers who've phoned and written to me, you're determined to make one dollar do the work of two. Me too! As long as my _ ac- commodation is. clean, decent (no red lights in the windows) and has a shower within reasonable distance, who needs color TV, a shoeshine service, a_hair- dresser, an all-night lounge and room service? Heaven knows 1 can read a book, clean my own shoes, wash my own hair, pour a shot of “duty-free” and provide my own midnight snack. BED AND BREAKFAST ts the key phrase! These lodgings are also known as “private hotels” or “board residences” and are a tradition in’ Europe. In England, they are all over the place and no trouble at all for the money-conscious traveller to find. What can you expect to pay? Somewhere between $10 and $15 per person per night. This should include a full English breakfast (coffee, tea, juice, cereal, bacon, sausage, eggs. toast, marmalade, jam — _ and possibly even kippers, kidneys and fried tomatoes if you hit it lucky). Avoid those horrors known as “Con- tinental breakfasts” like the plague unless you're roseway travel Ellle Hender, CTC Manager desperate! Translated, Continental breakfasts are an excuse for strong coffee, stale rolls and cold toast. Now, how do you find a suitable “B and B”? 1. Publications: British Travel Books P.O. Guide to Guest Houses, Farmhouses and Inns ($8.75) — Where to Stay in Scotland (Bed and Breakfast) (§2.60) —Where to Stay in English Regions ( various prices) Include 75 cents for postage. A complete list is available. CPAir has a neat little booklet (nice price! — free) available to all who have booked a flight to Britain on their airline. Called “Bed and Breakfast in Britain” it gives 14 pages of listings with telephone numbers. Don't forget the famous Frommer's guides — available at bookstores. 2. Local (in Britain) tounsst information centres. Many of these will also book a bed ahead for your next stop. The booking cost is minimal — about $1.50. By using this service, you can grab your British Rail Pass or rental car and amble = slowly towards your next destination, assured of a bed when you arrive. 3. Bed and Breakfast accom- modation can rarely be booked ahead from Canada. Travel agents can't afford to arrange it because it isn't profitable. If you wish to do it on your own, throw a dart at a page of listings and start writing letters — including a deposit and a return en- velope. International reply forms are available at the post office. This is a httle chancy unless you've stayed at the place before and know you'll like it. There’s an added ad- vantage in going “B and B”. After 14 visits to Great Britain, I’ve come to the conclusion that many of their restaurants are overpriced! Sure, you'll get beautiful service, charming surroundings but a big tab. My experience (spoiled from all our terrific Canadian restaurants) is that I’d rather eat cheaply in pubs. One guide that I intend to order from “British Travel Books” is called “Just a Bite”. It includes pubs, cafeterias, coffee shops and traditional teas. If you're a vegetanan or looking for some good ‘ole fashioned fish and chips — check the guide. At $3.95 (U.S.) plus postage, I expect to save a few hundred dollars out of it. It certainly is possible to visit a good restaurant in Bnitain — all you have to do is find it.
